College Prowler Take

Ethernet ports or wireless access sites are available to students in every building on campus. For this reason, many students choose to bring laptops. Because it is so easy to get online from virtually anywhere on campus, you will see people on their laptops just about any time. With so many laptop users around, students feel that it is relatively easy for them to find a computer in any of the labs—and there is almost always a computer available at the library, as many students go there simply to print. For students who have a desktop or do not have any type of computer, this is comforting, especially since the labs are open late, some of them 24 hours a day.

Computer labs are plentiful on campus and so are Ethernet jacks. Students here are very tech savvy, and for those who are not, ResNet (Residential Networking services) is there to help with any questions or problems you might have. They even provide free software, like Norton Anti-Virus. Quite a few classes use Web sites, such as Blackboard, to host discussions of course material outside of the classroom, which makes for another helpful technological resource. A wide variety of elective classes offer lessons on computer and Internet use, so students can take those to improve their computer literacy.

Almost everybody has a laptop...

Almost everybody has a laptop here, and there's free Wi-Fi in most of the buildings on campus. There's one Internet connection for every bed in every dorm room, so even if your dorm doesn't have wireless (they're trying to update it so all do, but they're still in the process), you won't have to fight over the Internet connection with your roommate. There aren't that many computer labs on campus, but you can usually find a free computer unless it's at midterms or finals. Another good thing to know is that printing from the computers in the labs is free. Take advantage of that because the cost of ink and paper adds up pretty fast!

UPS doesn't have too many options...

UPS doesn't have too many options in terms of computer labs (basically the library and the McIntyre lab), but those computers only fill up completely during midterm and finals week. The Wi-Fi on campus works in the dorms and in buildings across campus, so it is great to have your own laptop.

The computer network at UPS is...

The computer network at UPS is very reliable and accessible. Although the library computer lab may often get crowded, it usually isn't a long wait before a computer opens up. Besides, there are other options if you are in a rush and really need a computer to print something out. Whether a student should bring his own computer or not really depends on how much they depend upon their computer. I think it would be more than plausible to survive without a personal computer, but I do believe that it's always helpful, particularly when living off campus.

I find it nice to have my own...

I find it nice to have my own computer, although there are many computer labs. There are a lot of computers in the library, and it never gets overly crowded. Sometimes it's actually easier to get stuff done in computer labs because you don't get as distracted. Only some dorms have Wi-Fi, but UPS is working toward expanding its wireless soon.

Computer labs are good at UPS....

Computer labs are good at UPS. There's always a computer open somewhere, though the main lab at the library is sometimes crowded. There's also a technology center, which is good for group projects, and plenty of smaller computer labs. There's wireless in most dorms, which makes having a laptop worthwhile. Most people do, but it's not required or expected for classes.
