Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is a student sentiment on campus that UPS is not ethnically diverse, which is a disappointment, but is somewhat expected when attending a small liberal arts school in the suburbs. Some students think that the University is fairly conscious of diversity issues, yet others think that it is overly sensitive at times, making a big deal out of things that students might otherwise pass over. Diversity goes beyond race and culture, though, and many students appreciate the perspectives brought about by the gay community, different religious groups, political organizations, and students from high and low income families. The administration and student body highly value a diverse atmosphere, bringing speakers with different points of view and encouraging students to look at all issues from multiple perspectives.

Each year, the school chooses a theme of diversity to explore through academic lectures, artistic events, and student activities. The theme for one academic year was “America at a Crossroads: Roots and Routes.” Initiatives like this are a great example of the efforts of the administration to encourage the acceptance of people with a variety of characteristics, morals, and values.

Not Much Diversity

I couldn't really tell you - I don't struggle with acceptance or challenges when it comes to ethnic or racial issues, but then again I'm not in the minority. I've never encountered an experience where a student has expressed concern in regards to this topic, however it is visible that there is a lack of racial diversity.

Not Diverse

they claim to be diverse and they are as far as having a range of different ethnic groups at this school, but every one thinks the same way and if you don't think like them then they do not like you. It is a very liberal campus. There was one incident that I recall where a friend of mine put up a pro-life flyer on a public bulletin board and was told by the president that he needed to be "more sensitive to other people's opinions" when there are pro-choice flyers on that same bulletin board all the time.

Facts

Gay Pride

Tolerance for homosexuality is high at UPS. Several campus groups such as BGLAD (Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians, and Allies for Diversity) and the Gay/Straight Alliance represent homosexuals on campus and work for progress on national policy. However, the number of openly gay students is relatively small.

Political Activity

Political clubs and demonstrations are plentiful on campus. Several student organizations represent the entire political spectrum. The campus is very in tune with the international scene. With the clash of ideas in student-hosted debates on issues from the Israel/Palestine conflict to rebuilding Iraq to fair trade coffee, a visitor might initially mistake UPS’s campus for UC Berkeley’s.

Economic Status

Aided by significant scholarships, UPS draws from a diverse economic background, but the plurality of the students come from double-income, upper-middle-class families.

Most Common Religions

While multiple groups are present on campus, the majority belong to the Christian faith. It is a fairly secular campus, overall. There are many diversity related clubs, including the Jewish Student Organization, as well as the Christian related groups.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are several minority groups on campus. The clubs with the largest membership are the Black Student Union (BSU), Asian Pacific Student Union (APASU), Native American Student Association (NASA) and the Jewish Student Organization (JSO). All of the clubs meet at the diversity center, a well-kept building across the café.
