Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Drug use is just not very common at UPS, but students do not deny that it exists. Most students distinguish between drugs and alcohol when asked about the two. Most students choose to drink at some point during their stay at UPS while very few get involved with drugs other than alcohol. Several students say that they feel no pressure to drink, smoke pot, or use whatever other drug that can be made available. Everybody knows someone who is over 21 who would be willing to buy alcohol for them. Similarly, most students say they know someone who could get them whatever drugs they wanted. Some students say that attaining drugs is surprisingly easy, and that pot is the most popular. There is a general sentiment that the drug scene at UPS is about the same as it is everywhere.

The University allows all students over the age of 21 to drink in the privacy of their residence halls but will bust most loud parties on campus. The school takes an approach to regulation that treats all students as adults. They understand that many students choose to drink, and convicted students may be sent to the Decrease Your Risk Training (DYRT) sponsored by Counseling, Health, and Wellness help educate students about how to drink responsibly. These programs also provide statistical information on UPS student usage of alcohol and drugs. Therefore, the attitude of the students, not a low supply of drugs and alcohol, tends to create a low amount of drug use on campus.
