College Prowler Take

UPS students who are members of the Greek system are very loyal to their chapters. There is a mixed reaction to the Greek system by those students who choose not to join. Some who are not involved in the Greek system swear against it. Others can appreciate the fact that their friends chose to rush and are supportive of their friends’ decisions. Fortunately, there is not a strong division between Greeks and independents on campus. Some students recognize the Greek presence and some do not; it really just depends on what you are into. Greeks are definitely visible on campus. However, their presence is different here than on many other college campuses. The Greek chapters do a lot of community service projects, reaching out to many underprivileged children in Tacoma and nearby Seattle. Greeks here have their share of fun as well, hosting some of the largest parties on campus.

The Greek community at UPS has been decreasing in size over the past 10 years. Under the direction of President Pierce, the University purchased all of the Greek housing, so it is now owned and regulated by the school. The school also employs a delayed rush, so students must spend at least a semester on campus to get a chance to see the reputations of each Greek organization before committing to join one of them. This is also a way to make sure that freshmen stay focused on their academics.

Frat parties are really exciting...

Frat parties are really exciting when you´re a freshman, but after that they get blah. Greek life isn´t huge but it´s there, sort of like an unwanted pimple. I guess I´m just bitter because my friend passed out from alcohol poisoning in her sorority bathroom once and her "sisters" stepped over her to get to the sink area, leaving her on the floor. If you want Greek, go to UC Santa Barbara. They have sunshine.

A surprising number of UPS...

A surprising number of UPS students belong to the Greek system, but it really doesn't play a huge role in the social scene. Besides the occasional parties and social events, the Greek system really isn't that important on campus. The system has definetly even declined since I enrolled in UPS.

Greek life is loved by those who participate in it. While it is not for me, it is great for those who are involved. At the moment, involvement is lower than previous years, but that is in the process of changing as the University realizes the importance of them in on-campus life. The parties they throw are a ton of fun, and mostly everyone is invited.

At the University of Puget Sound,...

At the University of Puget Sound, Greek life is a part of campus, but it is not required that you be in a sorority or fraternity to be involved in the social scene. It's nice that there is the Greek life component, though, because it is pretty rare with small schools. Also, Rush for freshmen is during the spring semester, which is really nice.

Greek life represents about 25...

Greek life represents about 25 percent of the population at Puget Sound. The unique part about Greek life is that first-year recruitment doesn't take place until spring semester. This helps keep the Greek community integrated with the rest of campus because as a first year, you find your niche on campus and then join a sorority or fraternity in the spring, as opposed to joining a Greek house your first few weeks and making all your friends in the Greek community.
