Best Time to Look for a Place

It’s best to start looking very early, right after winter break. Most renters list then, and you have a better chance at getting something you really want. The Off Campus Student Services offer a great search where you can look for places right around campus.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Many students choose to live off campus for less regulation from the school and an opportunity to save money. (after utilities, most students find that they do not actually save money.) Students vary in their opinions on the quality and affordability of off-campus housing. Some have found great bargains for their apartments, and others have had to endure real dumps. Overall, when students move off campus, they are aware that they will take a cut in both the quality of the housing and the level of campus amenities. If there happens to be a problem, they do not have the ease of 24-hour services like security or the ready assistance of facilities management like they would in the residence halls. Students also may find it difficult to return to campus for social events after going home. However, most of the students who choose to live off campus live very close.

The number of available houses off campus is great, however, finding one that is near campus in decent condition and affordable is often difficult. UPS has several services for students who live off campus including assistance in finding decent, suitable housing and advice in dealing with residential problems when they come up. There are also several posters advertising rental properties displayed all over campus. Local newspapers and other publications can be helpful as well. Just do yourself a favor and do the research before making any commitments—once you sign a lease, there’s no getting out.

Off Campus Houses

The rent is Tacoma is fairly cheap. You can rent a home with a few of your friends and end up paying $350 per month for your room. The houses are all within walking distance of the campus. Landlords have been renting to students for a long time so you shouldn't be in for any big surprises. The houses are not that nice but they work just fine. Some students like to change houses every year while others find a good one and stay in it for all three years.

Residential Area

Puget Sound is in a nice, residential area of town. There are plenty of cool houses to choose from, but the ones closest to campus get spoken for early on, so be sure to jump on that early in the spring semester.

Renting a house with a few friends tends to be a lot cheaper than on-campus housing. Most students move off campus starting sophomore year.
