Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Public transportation is good in Tacoma. Pierce Transit runs 56 bus routes, two of which border the Puget Sound campus. Students can get anywhere in Tacoma for $1.50. The downtown district recently installed a light-rail system, so once you get downtown, you can get between shops and restaurants without driving or getting back on the bus. As parking downtown is expensive, this light-rail system is a huge plus. You can also take advantage of the train system for weekend excursions into Seattle. Wherever you travel with public transportation, make sure that you read the bus schedule carefully, and do not get stuck without a ride in the evenings. Late-night public transportation is not available and you might have to shell out for a cab.

Overall, students are pleased with the public-transportation system, but some have reservations brought on by strange men who seem to ride the buses for fun. The buses are very clean, and the service is regular and reliable with buses coming every half hour or so. Freshmen who are not yet familiar with the city do not need to fear the bus system. Friendly bus drivers are willing to help you out if you simply tell them where you are going. If you are too unsure of the area to venture out on your own, you can always sign up for a trip with one of the many student organizations who often borrow University vans for their excursions off campus.

Transportation

In Tacoma and on campus, the most you need for transportation are your feet, a skateboard, or a bike. You are nearby Seattle so it is nice to have a car to visit (45 minute drive) rather than taking a bus (2 hour commute). The bus system in Tacoma isn't great. Most students elist friends for rides to the mall or to 6th street.

Poor Public Transportation

Buses are the only option and they're not that great compared to most cities. Much easier to get around if you have a car and a lot of people don't because most people live so close to campus

Pierce Country Transportation

Pierce County Transit in the city of Tacoma is rarely on time. In fact, it's almost never on time. The buses are either late or early, depending on the route. However, the buses are clean, safe, and they travel through main thoroughfares and reach frequented destinations by all people.
