Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Rain, rain, rain; it is as much a part of the UPS experience as the classes. But students learn to deal with it and often brave the frequent droplets with just a raincoat, no umbrella. When it starts to come down harder, though, you will know that your rain jacket is a nice item to have. Tacoma winters are considerably mild because of the lack of snow and freezing temperatures. Students wear long pants during most of the winter months, and heavy sweaters and fleeces will suffice if you are not the puffy-down-jacket type. The spring feels warmer than it actually is as the sun is shining, driving students out of the dorms to lounge on the grass in their bathing suits. Tacoma has great summers, full of beautiful clear skies and comfortable temperatures.

Tacoma enjoys moderate temperatures year-round, with summers that are not too hot and winters that are not too cold. Rain is a part of Northwest culture; the rain is more of a light mist, or just sprinkles as suggested by the average rainfall. It makes the winter days seem short, dark, and dreary, but it keeps the air crisp and the grass green long into the summer. The winters are dry and the campus rarely sees snow, but Tacoma can still get cold. For those who want their winters to be somewhat white, substantial snow can be found about an hour’s drive away at the nearest ski resorts.

It Gray Here.

It does not rain nearly as many think it does in the Pacific Northwest. In Tacoma the fall and winter months are usually pretty gray with a little rain. The early fall and spring months are warm and beautiful.

Not a Drawing Point

The whether in Tacoma is not one of the reasons people seek out UPS. If you like rain, clouds and cold, you are set. There are still alot of REALLY nice days though.

dreary

I'm from California, and though I expected a lot of rain, I didn't expect a) maybe 10 days of sun total second semester and b) temperatures that rarely, if ever, rise above 60 degrees.

The weather simply discourages activity, so though Puget Sound attracts many outdoor-oriented students, most never end up spending time outdoors because the weather is too unpleasant.
