Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics are an important aspect of college life to a lot of URI students regardless of whether they are players or spectators. Even though games may not be selling out in the box office, students do show their support. Rhode Island has a lot of pride, and this little state has a lot of big dreams. Many of the sports facilities are newer, like the Ryan Center and the Boss Ice Arena, which will hopefully attract more people to the games and get them more excited about URI sports.

The men’s basketball team brings a lot of excitement and energy to campus. The team plays in the very competitive Atlantic 10 Conference and plays in the beautiful and fan-friendly Ryan Center. Basketball games are loud and intense—all students are encouraged to come to the games and be as loud as possible. There is even a student organization called “The Mob” that attends all the games and specializes in heckling the visiting team. Basketball games are the best place to be loud, sing the URI fight song, and show your Rhody pride. However, the basketball team is not the only team to cheer for on campus—hockey, baseball, and softball games, and even track meets are always a fun time.

Student Involvement

There are so many great things that are going around on campus where students can get involved. I love going to the games and getting involved and meeting new people.

Athletics at URI

At URI, programs like the basketball program used to be the biggest in the state, but recently the team, along with many other athletic teams, have become the laughing stock of their conferences. Students do get involved however, including the student section called "The Mob." The facilities like the Ryan Center are top notch, but the teams simply are not. Unfortunately, if friends and I attend a game, it is usually because there's nothing else to do, as opposed to going to see the team play. Most often, they lose.

School Spirit

Rhode Island has a lot of pride, and school spirit is something that encourages students. One of the first things that new students learn when they come to URI is the fight song. “We’re Rhode Island born, and we’re Rhode Island bred, and when we die we’ll be Rhode Island dead, so go go Rhode Island, Island U-R-I!” Students are forced to sing it with enthusiasm, and it really gets everyone going. Most students are proud to be at URI and you can always find someone wearing school sweat shirts, pants, and T-shirts. Students know how to show their spirit when it counts most.

Getting Tickets

All URI students get free admission to all home games with a valid student ID. Students can easily get tickets right before a game. Some Basketball games, like the annual in-state rival game against Providence College, sell tickets a lot quicker, so students that want to attend should line up very early.
