College Prowler Take
Greek life makes up a small percentage of URI. Most students involved in a fraternity or sorority say they are glad they joined and have positive things to say about their experience. Students not involved in Greek life are not complaining, either. Greeks certainly do not rule the school or the social scene, but it is a good way to make friends and keep active on campus. It is however, not the only way to survive life on campus. They are not a dominant group, but if you’re looking to join an organization, check them out.
To independents, Greek life seems like a lame excuse to make—and pay for—friends who strive to be cookie-cutter-replicas of one another. To members, Greek organizations can be utilized as support teams and one giant family unit.

Greek life has no role in my social life. I have not been to a frat or sorority party since the first week of school my freshman year.

I was all about being in a sorority when I first got to URI. I’m from Jersey, and I wanted to make sure that I would always have something to do, because I couldn’t just go home whenever I wanted. I’m glad I’m in a sorority, and I made some great friends. I live in a sorority house with 40 other girls. We have a good time. |

I’m glad I joined a frat. I meet a lot of great people and made friends for life. My boys will always have my back, and I know that I can always count on them. It is like having another family, my brothers. |

I’ve gone to a couple of frat parties and they were fun. If you’re a girl, they will let you in without a problem. I think they make some guys pay. It’s typical, but I can’t really complain. |

I don’t really understand the whole Greek life. What exactly do they do? Whenever I drive by a frat house, they are outside playing sports or in the middle of the road with a bucket asking for donations for something. They don’t seem very productive to me. |

Did You Know?
Greek Week, held each semester by Greek life members, encourages students to look into joining a frat or aorority. Greek Week comes complete with great parties and a seven days of fun on campus. It is the perfect time to meet people involved with Greek life at URI to see if it is right for you.
Many frat or sorority members choose to live off campus in Narragansett rather than in their respective fraternity or sorority houses. These “off-campus frat/sorority houses” host numerous parties.
