Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The local atmosphere is a huge part of the overall URI experience. College students have taken over the community, much to the chagrin of locals, and made it their own. Since most students live off campus in the surrounding towns, the atmosphere is similar to what you would find on campus. Narragansett is your average town, but URI makes it stand out. Students rule the town and neighborhoods—they have turned this summer town into a year-round paradise. There are a lot of restaurants and bars throughout town, along with entertainment and shopping—shopping plazas and independentlyowned stores are all around. There is a movie theatre close by, as well as a bowling alley. Even grocery stores are taken over by URI students in Narragansett. The local atmosphere, however, lacks a mall and major commercial companies.

Since Narragansett is a beach town, there are several boating and fishing opportunities available. This offers students something a little different than what you would find in a city atmosphere. The local atmosphere is all about URI, and that’s a good thing.

The Potential of URI

URI could be one of the most fun and enjoyable party schools on the east coast given the amount and general "laissiz faire" attitude of most students, however, the campus suffers from being located smack-dab in the middle of nowhere with the closest town, which has little fun to be had in it, ten minutes away. If you don't have access to a car, don't go to URI. The campus is built on a large hill so regardless if you're a commuting student or resident, you have to prepare for a mountain trek to get to class. That being said, the people and most of the professors are smart yet extremely intelligent. There is a lot to be learned at URI but the administration has to be open to learn from the students.

Rural

There is not much to do in the surrounding areas of campus. Kingston is a very rural area which is surrounded by beaches in Narragansett and wooded areas.
