College Prowler Take

Supposedly, URI has been voted the No. 1 party school in the nation on a few occasions. Although this stigma has stayed present in the minds of many people, the school has really tried not to live up to the party-school reputation. URI is now a dry campus, and there is no smoking in any buildings, including the dorms. Still, there is no stopping URI students from having a good time. Dorm rooms, unfortunately, are too small to have parties in, and they are also closely watched by RAs and housing directors. However, there is no problem with having some friends over—just try to keep noise levels at a minimum because the cops could get called.

As for the real parties, most students migrate off campus where upperclassmen live and where parties can be found every weekend. Hordes of URI students have—depending on who you ask—either invaded or socially liberated the neighborhoods in nearby Narragansett, RI. Students can find parties by simply driving down the street and seeing a line of cars. There are also a lot of bars around town that are always busy. You could literally go out every night and have some place to go. Bars hold special happy hour prices and drink specials especially to attract URI students. There are also many different kinds of bars to meet the different expectations of people. Dive bars, sports bars, martini bars, local bars, and nightclubs are just some of the things you can expect. At URI, there is never a dull moment.

I'm a senior who goes out five or six nights a week—I love URI. Each night has its own ritual. Monday is pint night, Tuesday is wing night, Wednesday is Bobby G's, Thursday is Bonvue, Friday is house parties or Charlie O's, Saturday is either more house parties or we take a party bus to Providence, Newport, or the one of the casinos, and on Sunday, you get free wings during the football season and specials at every bar. It never stops here. I can't forget to mention that there's a free food buffet at happy hour at one of the bars Monday through Friday. You can eat dinner for free five days a week, if you really want to.

I like playing drinking games at parties. I’m a beer pong [Beirut] champion. I love it. It’s fun and gets you drunk.

Frats on campus usually have parties and let everyone in. They are pretty fun. They make sure you get drunk because they have beer and very powerful jungle juice. Everyone just dances and has a good time.

I love going to parties, but some are just not fun. I hate when you can’t move, get to the keg, or talk to people because it is so loud. I have more fun at small parties with my friends.

There is a lot to do at URI. Since a lot of kids have houses off campus, there are always parties. The only bad thing is that the cops usually come and break them up when they are too big or too loud.

Facts

Club Crawler

There are not many clubs in close proximity to URI. In order to get more of a nightclub scene, students usually have to head up to Providence. It’s about a 45-minute drive or students have the option of taking the bus, which leaves directly from school.

Bar Prowler

Bars are a huge part of URI social and nightlife. There are a lot of local bars that the students have embraced and made into hot spots.

Organization Parties

The University of Rhode Island Ballroom Dancing Club holds dances and formals at the Union. ASA is another group that holds an annual winter ball and numerous dances and parties throughout the year. Many students don't go to the dances and parties that are held on campus, unless they belong to that particular organization.

What to Do if You're Not 21

Most bars and nightclubs in Narragansett are 21 and up. Going up to Providence, you can find more clubs that only require patrons to be 18 years old. Check out the Complex, Metropolis, the Strand, and Club Hell. Parties are just as big of a part of the nightlife as bars are. If you are under 21 it is not hard to find a house party to go to. Since bars close at 1 a.m., people usually go to parties after bars anyway.
