Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Living off campus is definitely worth it. After sophomore year, most students get tired of living in one room and head off campus. The cost of living off campus is about the same as living on campus, but every house is different. It can get expensive when paying for food, gas, and utilities, but even though there are more bills to be paid, the independence may be well worth it. People who live “Down the Line,” as it is referred to by students, are about 10 miles from campus but are closer to the beach, bars, and restaurants. Since Narragansett is a beach town, families who have summer houses here rent them out from September to May to URI students.

Anywhere from two to 10 people can live in a house together. The most attractive part about living in a house is having more privacy and being with friends. You have more freedom to do the things you like and not get in trouble for doing them. Finding a house is convenient and well worth it. Students who live off campus love it, and students who live on campus usually can’t wait to move off. The only common complaint about living off campus is commuting to school, which can take 10 to 20 minutes.

Summer Homes Everywhere

For students wanting to rent people's summer homes off-campus, there are plenty of options within a fifteen mile radius of the school. If one has a car and the means to support an apartment with rent, etc., securing housing isn't an issue.

Hitting the Beach

The off campus housing at URI is one of the best parts about the college. Typically students live in Narragansett which is right on the beach. The beaches are beautiful and the neighborhoods are usually all filled with students so the atmosphere is still young. The cost of living is also less than living on campus with more space gained.
