Transportation

Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town Having a car is essential to most students. Since URI is in a rural area, most students need to travel a couple of miles to encounter other forms of civilization. Most students usually get rides from friends if they don't have their own car.
Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • A cab ride to the airport costs around $65.
  • Airport Taxi and Limousine Service (401) 737-2868
  • Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) (401) 781-9400

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Although transportation is important at URI, public services are not that popular. Most students have a car on campus or know someone with one. URI is in a rural setting, so taking a bus to get around town is not a common thing. URI is surrounded by suburban communities, so taking taxis, buses, or trains are not a necessity and are not always available. Public transportation for everyday use is foreign to most students. Borrowing a friend’s car or begging for rides is much more common than paying bus fare.

People who live far away do have options. T.F. Green airport is close by, and the train station is practically across the street from campus. There are ways to get out of town—you just have to know where to look.

Buses

There are buses that travel all around campus and there is a bus stop on campus that allows you to access some the other buses that travel to other major towns in the state and bus fare for off campus buses is only $2

You Need a Car

Most parties are off campus, you need a car. Most jobs available are close by off campus, you need a car. Most parties are off campus and always about 15 minutes away, you need a car. The only bank on campus is the URI bank, you need a car to see a bank teller. Most nightlife attractions are 40 minutes away in Providence, you need a car. Basically, you need a car, which is $240 to park a year. It's outrageous, and the parking here sucks. There are only two huge available lots, but they're far away from everything. And lugging your huge basket of laundry that entire walk also sucks.

Transportation for URI

Transportation is pretty good for those that are injured on campus or unable to drive. There are busses and shuttles that are transporting students at all times.
