Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students at UR are required to fulfill general requirements in all aspects of academics—from visual and performing arts, to science, to history. There is such a wide selection of classes available that students can usually find a course that interests them. One problem with the general education requirement is that all students need to be proficient in at least one language other than English. Freshmen are also required to take CORE, a course designed to introduce them to what college courses are like. This class involves reading lots of books and discussing them with your classmates.

The business and leadership schools are two of UR’s strengths. Graduating from the leadership school gives a student a unique degree that will open doors to hundreds of companies. The business school is one of the top schools of its kind in the country, and alumni of the school often look to UR first when recruiting. Professors are very approachable because class sizes are small and intimate. This allows students to develop personal relationships with their professors—it is not uncommon for a professor to invite his entire class to dinner at his house. Classes are challenging but also interesting. If you choose your courses wisely, you will take courses that will prepare you for life after college without being overwhelmed.

Psych Major

Richmond has great professors within the psychology department. They're all extremely approachable and most have their own labs, allowing students to apply and hopefully get some on-hands experience as part of a research team.

Have Fun!

Overall, the professors are always willing to get involved with the students. I personally have made friends with many of my professors who have always been helpful and interested in my future plans. Bad professors are few and far between. There is a good variety of course subjects for a relatively small school. And of course there is our unique Leadership school.

Journalism

While I have not declared a major, I have taken multiple Journalism courses and am considering it as a major or minor. If you want a gum ball, breeze of a major, this is not it. The workload is that of a real journalist in articles, fact-checking, editing, digital clips, and even a little field work. Each course deals with a different aspect of journalism, whether it is the relationship between media and society, copy editing, news writing, or otherwise. The classes are in appropriate classrooms for the particular niche; computers are provided when required. I am unaware of internship/job opportunities, because I have not discussed or inquired this matter. The professors are all highly qualified, demand excellence, and care about their students.
