Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The biggest asset to the Spider athletics program was the football team’s recent National A-10 Championship. The new coach for the Spiders, Coach London, is visible and excited, and the players as well as the student body and faculty seem to really like and respect him. He has turned the football program around, and our games will probably be even better attended next year, after having a championship under our belt. Attendance will also increase with the new on-campus football stadium being constructed right now. Basketball and baseball are also strong points of UR athletics and games are a lot of fun to attend.

For students not gifted enough to play a varsity sport, club sports are a fun way to meet people, exercise, and compete against other schools. It’s fairly easy to make a team, and once you are on one, you get to travel to other schools to compete in tournaments. Intramural sports are even bigger than club sports, and in some cases, bigger than varsity sports. Every year, the fraternities compete against one another to see who can win the title of Intramural Champion. Games between rival fraternities can get ugly as drunken fans pack the sidelines to cheer for their team and curse the other guys. Brawls have erupted at intramural basketball games, and there are now police officers at every game. Sororities also participate in intramurals and get quite competitive, but their games don’t get nearly as rowdy as the fraternity games.

Do We Have Sports Other Than Football and Basketball?

Students follow football and basketball pretty closely, because our teams do well. Admittedly, most students are drinking at games, but they turn out and get excited. Besides, um, NCAA Tournament, A-10 Champions? Neither of those is a small deal.

Solid

We just got a new football stadium on campus and the basketball team consistently delivers during March madness. Lots of club sports too.

Low School Spirit

Football i guess is the biggest sport here. We used to be more popular when we were national champions. We'll see how it goes this year. No one really goes to basketball games so they bribe you to go with free pizza and shot glasses. People arent really school spirited here they just go for social engagement. Blah

Most Popular Sports

The football team! The University of Richmond won the National Championship in Chatanooga, Tenn., in December 2008. Coach Mike London led the Spiders in a 24-7 victory over Montana. It was the first title in UR football history.

Most Overlooked Teams

The baseball team. They’re nationally ranked, and the games are a lot of fun to attend on relaxing, sunny afternoons.

School Spirit

School spirit fluctuates depending on how well the teams are doing during a particular season. When our football and basketball teams are doing well, games are well-attended. However, during losing streaks, you can expect the crowd not to be very loud. While there are some die-hard student fans who come to every game, they fall few and far between.

Getting Tickets

UR students get in free when they show their SpiderCard. Other fans need to buy tickets from the Box Office.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Around the lake in the middle of campus—it is beautiful.
