Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is little to no diversity at UR. Most of the minorities on campus are international students, and they tend to socialize only with one another. This is unfortunate because it is doesn’t allow students to meet people with different beliefs, backgrounds, and cultures. The school is a bit too conformist, and you really have to go out of your way if you want to meet a diverse group of people. A few years ago, there was a scandal at UR because the University hired actors to come and pose for photos to be placed in the school’s guidebook. Many of these actors were minorities, and it gave the appearance that UR is a more diverse school than it actually is.

The only other type of diversity at UR is what part of the country students come from. Although the majority of these out-of-state students are from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or New York, there are students from all over the country. As sad as it is, at UR you really have to make an effort to get to know people from different races. You definitely should make that effort, however, because you can learn a lot about the world and about yourself through fostering these relationships.

Preppy, Rich, White Kids

Most would look around Richmond's campus and immediately stereotype our campus as a preppy, white, rich kid paradise. Much of the ethnic diversity can be spotted in our varsity athletes (primarily the basketball and football teams) or in ethically/racially clustered groups on campus. Walking around, one does not see much diversity on the surface. But an appreciation for student life and on-campus organizations will allow students to discover that there are in fact many diversity initiatives, racially-based student organizations with great outreach, and a general mindset of open acceptance among students.

Mostly White

Richmond's student body is comprised of mostly white people, but there is still a good amount of diversity. People come from all walks of life and you will meet as many students with millionaire parents as you will those who are on need based financial aid.

Diversity in Many Ways Here at the University of Richmond

Though the University of Richmond is small and commonly known to be a very homogeneous campus in regards to monetary demographics, it depends who you talk to. Most of the student athletes, which comprise a large amount of the enrollment at our small school of about 4,000 undergraduates, are of hispanic, african-american, asian, or latin descent. Being a student-athelte myself, I tend to be friends with other athletes, and most of my friends are very diverse in race and thinking. But for most of the school that does not play sports, students tend to be non-hispanic, and with an affluent background. Usually at the dining hall, you will see a mix of both types of people sitting together and eating luch which is really refreshing to me! Racism seems to not be much of an issue here and though some birds of a feather flock together, most of the student body is respectful of each other.

Facts

Gay Pride

Although there aren't any obvious examples of intolerance toward gay students, there isn't an outpouring of support, either. There are several groups such as GLAD and SafeZone, but the gay community is not extremely visible on campus, with the exception of Coming Out week when the campus is full of tolerance-promoting activities.

Political Activity

The campus is divided politically, with both conservatives and liberals strongly represented. People who enjoy politics will find a place to debate ideas and a chance for activism, but for the most part, students could care less about politics. This is another symptom of the UR Bubble, and the campus political groups are often frustrated by the apathetic nature of most students.

Economic Status

UR is notorious for being the “University of Rich Kids.” Although this is not completely true, most students come from wealthy or at least above average economic backgrounds. Some of the cars that students drive are ridiculously expensive.

Most Common Religions

Catholicism and Christianity, although there is a sizeable Jewish population, as well. Weekly non-denominational services are held in the UR Chapel and are highly attended.

Minority Clubs on Campus

The Multicultural Student Union (MSU) has the greatest visibility on campus, but there are several traditionally black sororities that have UR chapters, and there has been a great deal of discussion recently about forming a black fraternity.
