College Prowler Take
UR doesn’t have that big of a drug scene. This is probably because of the strictness of the University and that you will most likely get caught if you buy, sell, or use drugs on campus. Of course, it is possible to get marijuana if you want it, and weed is definitely the most widely-used drug (besides alcohol). The prices are higher than at most schools because the students here are wealthy and can afford to pay for it. It is also a question of supply and demand, and the fact that the dealer is taking a huge risk by selling drugs. Another thing about the drug scene is that the supply comes in spurts. It is either a feast or a famine. A lot of people use Ritalin or Adderall as a study aid. Few students at UR think that using these pills without a prescription counts as drug abuse. Anyone who has a prescription can make money selling their pills around exam time when students need a pick-me-up during marathon study sessions. (Some think the University hasn’t done enough to educate students about the dangers of using these pills.) Ecstasy and cocaine are relatively new to the school and are rarely used at all. Non-users won’t feel pressured to use drugs because the scene is so underground. There really isn’t any reason to use drugs because if you get caught, you will most likely be kicked out of school.

Overall, it is a small percentage of students who are seriously involved. Campus police has begun cracking down on the selling of drugs on campus, as well as the students’ partaking of them. |

Cocaine is big in some circles but isn’t really a threat to the average student. I think it is mostly a case of rich kids with too much money on their hands trying coke because they are curious. |
