Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

UR has more than adequate facilities that are convenient and readily available to students. There is plenty to do: exercise, swim, play basketball, tennis, shoot pool, watch movies (the list goes on-and-on). Several basketball and raquetball courts are available. One excellent addition to the facilities at the University of Richmond is the newly renovated athletic complex called the Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness. It’s one of the most popular and well-attended buildings on campus. It also is one of only five facilities in the country to receive the 2008 National Intramural Recreational Sports Association Outstanding Sports Facility award, with state of the art equipment, clean and spacious locker rooms, two group exercise rooms, and ample space to work out and play.

The fact that UR has an on-campus bar (the Cellar) is one of the biggest highlights of the school. It is great to be able to grab a few drinks on campus with your friends and not have to worry about finding a ride home. More schools should follow this example because it allows students to drink safely in a controlled environment. The Cellar makes UR a school with great academic potential, but also one with a reasonable atmosphere for entertainment. With the exception of a few possible additions, the facilities at UR are extensive enough that you will never run out of things to do.

Great Facilities

The gym is really great on campus: tons of treadmills, a nice pool, and lots of equipment that is available to use. The library is also very nice, though it can get very crowded during exams.

Underrated and outstanding!

Facilities are outstanding. The school's got a healthy endowment and they've really spread the wealth around campus with new construction projects, updates to existing buildings and great attention to outdoor landscaping. Academic and administrative buildings are modern and well maintained. Same goes for the library, student center, dining hall, theater and all sports and recreational facilities. Dorms, as expected, receive the least amount of resources, although are pretty well maintained and clean. The weakest link on campus might be the UFA (University Forest Apartments) that are starting to show some age inside and out. The apartments also lack the style of the Gothic grandeur construction found elsewhere on campus, and sort of stand apart from the rest of the campus beauty.

All in all, however, great facilities at UR, housed in buildings with a lot of old world charm.

Favorite Things To Do

The Cellar is the number one on-campus hang-out for students over 21. It has a great selection of beers and food, and hosts live bands or open mic nights. Happy hour is from 5:30 a.m.–9 p.m. each night. The coffee shop, conveniently located on the first floor of the library, serves as a great place to go on a study break or get your caffeine fix. Students can also be found in the Whitehurst lounge/convenience store studying, grabbing a bite to eat or playing pool.

UR has a recently renovated gym, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, two tennis courts, an indoor pool, tons of pool tables, Ping Pong tables, and much more. When you have had all the exercise you can handle, there is a bar on campus where you can relax and kick back with some friends while listening to live music. The Modlin Center includes a museum, and also hosts a variety of plays and concerts by world-renowned artists.
