Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Greek life dominates the campus social scene—people have transferred because they didn’t get into a frat or sorority. It is ridiculous, but it happens. Since UR is so small, it is easy to get a reputation, and a bad one can lead to being blacklisted from frats or sororities. It is a little too much like high school. If you are involved with the Greek system, and it seems like most students are, then you have it made. With 50 or so people in your fraternity or sorority, you never have to worry about finding something to do on the weekends. Frats and sororities associate with one another, and there aren’t any big rivalries outside of intramurals. When the Row is open, it is the place to be.

As much as the Greeks party (which is a lot), they also perform helpful services for the community. Every year, each fraternity and sorority chooses a philanthropy project and coordinates events to benefit that organization. Almost every Greek-affiliated student participates in community service day, and the Row is decorated for local children the weekend before Halloween for “Trick-or-Treat Street.”

Greeks Are Very Present, but Not Overbearing

30% of men are Greek, and 60% of Women are. The Lodges, or chapter houses are only for parties so the greeks still live with the general population. Sororities are getting "cottages" next year, but the are only for meetings, not parties or to live in. Still, the Greek presence is not so great that you are excluded if you aren't in it.
