College Prowler Take

Greek life dominates the campus social scene—people have transferred because they didn’t get into a frat or sorority. It is ridiculous, but it happens. Since UR is so small, it is easy to get a reputation, and a bad one can lead to being blacklisted from frats or sororities. It is a little too much like high school. If you are involved with the Greek system, and it seems like most students are, then you have it made. With 50 or so people in your fraternity or sorority, you never have to worry about finding something to do on the weekends. Frats and sororities associate with one another, and there aren’t any big rivalries outside of intramurals. When the Row is open, it is the place to be.

As much as the Greeks party (which is a lot), they also perform helpful services for the community. Every year, each fraternity and sorority chooses a philanthropy project and coordinates events to benefit that organization. Almost every Greek-affiliated student participates in community service day, and the Row is decorated for local children the weekend before Halloween for “Trick-or-Treat Street.”

Greek life is huge in terms of parties. Although there are other options, such as the UFA's and off campus events, the lodges (fraternity houses used only for parties) make up a large part of the party scene. For girls, a sorority is what you make of it. I think almost half of the female population participates in Greek life for philanthropy, socials, and sisterhood activities.

If you want nothing to do with Greeks, there is still plenty to do. It is much easier to be an independent guy than an independent girl, I think because of the nature of the sexes. I was very much independent, lived with several Greek girls, and still had a blast.

It by no means dominates the social scene, but it does play a major part. The Greeks are not 100 percent exclusive. Many Greeks have independent friends, so there is a definite mixture when it comes to social events.

I’m in a sorority, but I hang out with guys and girls in all different frats and sororities. Fraternity parties are the biggest parties, but they are also the most fun, so that’s okay.

There is a very active Greek element on campus. I’m in a frat, and I love it. We do a lot for the community and the school and have a lot of fun.
