Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students agree that, aside from some minor vandalism and theft, UR is incredibly safe. One of the biggest deterrents to crime is that the campus police maintain a very visible and active presence 24 hours per day. The weekly crime reports that are published in the school paper usually show a few cases of vandalism or theft of iPods, and the biggest deal of the past few years was when someone’s car was stolen—something very out of the ordinary. The most common incident reports are of theft of University property, like laptops, reported missing from classrooms and labs.

Students never have to fear for their own personal safety. Although the University offers the Safety Shuttle to female students, as well as emergency phones, there is never any need to use these services. In fact, most girls feel comfortable walking around campus at night alone. The campus itself is very well lit, and there are cops everywhere. Students often refer to campus as the “UR Bubble.” It really does seem as though the campus is isolated from the outside world, and it is easy to forget that the city of Richmond is only 15 minutes away, a city which led the nation in homicide percentage per population a few years ago. However, at UR, you are safe.

Safe Campus

Campus is really safe. I've walked around campus at all hours of the night and have never felt uncomfortable. There is security visible at most times. The neighborhood surrounding the school is nice and really safe and I have never seen anyone on campus who looked like they shouldn't be there. There are some areas that could be better lit at night but other than that, it's a very safe, small campus

Safe Enough

There was a series of beatings that took place over a short period of time. Rumor was they were related to gang initiations in Richmond. The issue was dealt with and there aren't really any other problems.

I Feel Entirely Safe, but...

There has never been a reason for me to feel unsafe on this campus. There is a blue light system in case of emergencies. There are also Safety Shuttles that make constant rounds of the campus at night and ride anyone who feels unsafe walking in the dark. The police are good people who care, but they and the administration are too acceptive of the alcoholism culture. This results in a lot of vandalism and costs innocent students money. If you use common sense and don't drink, then you're never unsafe here.
