Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Richmond is a lovely historic city that provides a wonderful setting for UR. Visiting one of the parks, museums or battlefields is a great way to spend an afternoon. The city is situated on the banks of the James River, and on warm, sunny days, most of the town can be found swimming, canoeing or kayaking there. One favorite spot for students is the Pony Pastures, a series of boulders and rapids in the river that is a great place for swimming or tanning. There is also plenty of shopping and several movie theaters.

A great day trip is to visit Virginia Beach, only an hour and a half east on I-64. Richmond is also close enough to Washington DC and Baltimore; you can drive there in the morning, spend a day in the city, and drive home in time for dinner. Myrtle Beach is only a few hours south, and the entire school relocates there for the week following spring finals for the legendary ‘Beach Week’ (it has to be experienced to be understood). The only potential drawback to UR’s location is that it is a bit too far from the city of Richmond. Public transportation is disappointing, and it is important to either have a car or have access to one in order to enjoy Richmond to the fullest since Richmond is a lovely city with a lot to see. Also, depending on what region of the country you are from, Richmond’s slow pace may be too much to bear at times.

Richmond is a city with vibrant music, art, and theater communities. It's home to big venues like the Richmond Coliseum which draws large tours and music acts like American Idol live and The Police. It's home to The Landmark Theater which hosts shows like The Lion King and Wicked as a part of the Broadway in Richmond program. Richmond also has many small music and dance clubs which are great for everything from raves to rowdy hardcore punk shows. Richmond is also known for its many festivals. From the Richmond Folk Festival to the Shakespeare Festival to the Lebanese Food Festival, you're bound to find one you'll enjoy. It is also full of history and art museums such as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (where many of Picasso's works are currently on display), the Virginia Holocaust Museum, and the Museum of the Confederacy.

Big City, Small School

Richmond is a great city that most people try to experience. Many students will take the "2 the bottom and back bus" to hit the club scene on the weekend. Many go down to Cary Street to shop and eat. Great small restaurants like Weezies.
