College Prowler Take

Students are into intramurals, which tends to be the less serious and more fun side of athletics. The general feeling on sports is there is not much reason to support UR varsity athletics. Due to our position as a Division III school, the athletics are less high profile than a larger school, and hence, the lower fan turnout. There is a large amount of the student body that participate in sports themselves, there’s just not that many people watching. UR also does not give athletic scholarships, so no superstars for sports show up.

You do see a lot of UR students involved in one facet of athletics or another. Many are die-hards for their own sports; the crew team is a particularly fierce group of people and is up at five in the morning to row on the Genesee River. Intramurals are a way for students to stay active even if it’s not participating in a varsity sport. You can start a team on your hall or with your friends and not have to worry about lots of practices, though some intramural sports can be competitive. As a whole, UR is very into fitness; if you ask, you’d find that nearly every student goes to the gym on a regular basis. There is also a fair amount of opportunity for sports, everything from equestrian to cricket. If you’re someone who likes to be active and involved in sports, you definitely can be.

Sports are supported, but they’re not the big Friday night activity. We really don’t go in big groups to games until our teams start to kick butt and win titles.

Varsity sports aren’t a big deal except for basketball—both the men’s and women’s teams are pretty good and attract decent crowds. IM sports are really fun and popular with a lot of people.

Being a varsity athlete myself, I would say that your sport is your family. If you watch groups of people walk around, they usually all play one sport. Each sport tends to be very cliquey. However, for those that don’t play sports, there are options such as IM teams. It seems that athletes support each other more so than non-athletes.

Varsity sports are not very big on campus. Our basketball teams are regularly good, but our football team is not good at all. IM sports are bigger and usually get competitive for those involved.
