College Prowler Take

The lack of variety and low quality of food are the top two complaints by students. Meliora, the sit-down style dining area is the best of the worst, but they have limited hours, and if you have class during the lunch hours, you’re pretty much out of luck. The Pit is convenient, but it’s the lowest rung on the ladder for food quality. They also changed around the meal plans recently and this, if anything, has made the whole situation worse. The prices also, for what you are getting, make you hand over your ID card at the cash register in disgust. A sandwich and a drink at the Club Express will run you about eight dollars. Many are angry that tuition must be so high, only to be given less-than-mediocre choices for food at high prices. As this happens to be the only half-decent food on campus, it also puts student meal plans at risk of being used up quickly. The cheapest place for food would be the Pit, but here on campus, you get what you pay for, and low prices will mean low quality food.

UR Dining still has far to travel in terms of decent food (and acceptable prices) on campus and satisfied students. The meal plan revamps only translate into confused freshmen, angry upperclassmen, and the same level and quality of food served.

At the beginning of the year, I thought the food was decent, but by the end of the year, I was kind of sick of it. It’s not bad, it’s just not home cooking. The Meliora is a really good spot. It’s a fancy dining hall that’s only open for lunch during the week. Their food is definitely restaurant-quality. As for the regular dining halls, I prefer Douglass because I think they have the best variety.

The food is awful, and the service is worse. However, anytime someone had an issue and contacted the head of the particular dining establishment, it was corrected.

Well, I’m not going to lie and say that on campus food is anything to brag about. There are three main places to eat on campus. Danforth is an all-you-can-eat dining center. It is expensive, and the food seems to be the worst out of the three places; freshmen tend to eat here because they haven’t discovered that other places on campus are better. The Pit has a grill, pizza, subs, wraps, and a few other selections. There is also a coffee shop in Wilson Commons. Douglass has a grill, pizza, deli, rotisserie chicken, quesadillas, burritos, and a few other things. After eating on campus for a while, most people seem to get tired of the food. At this point, it’s best to head out to the off-campus restaurants.

The dining halls on campus were recently changed for the worse. Last year, I would have highly recommended Douglass Dining Hall, but now that seems to be the worst choice. I would say the best options are either Danforth, an all-you-can-eat dining hall, or Wilson Commons (Pit), which offers a deli, pizza, and a grill for hamburgers and such. There are also little spots throughout the campus to grab a quick drink be it coffee or soda or juice and a quick snack.

The food on campus is awful. The administration, in conjunction with Aramark, our food company, ruined lunch/afternoon dining by making the usual á la carte center all-you-can-eat, which no one wanted. There is only one dining option between 2–5 p.m. for all 6,000 students on campus, which is terrible planning, as well. Every center at lunch has a huge line, and one can barely fit lunch into their schedule anymore. The quality of food is also poor, and everything is overpriced. The food service workers have poor attitudes and often don’t even listen to your requests.

Did You Know?

The saying, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch,” just doesn’t hold at UR. Free pizza abounds in the beginning of the year, and at convocation you are treated to a gourmet buffet set up on the lawn, free of charge.
