College Prowler Take
The general consensus is if you don’t have a computer on campus, you’ll be at a disadvantage. Most have a PC in their room, and while you can get by without one, it’s generally a better idea to bring one along for your own use. You can use the public computers in the labs, but you run the risk of losing things if you save documents in the public drives and not being able to get a computer if it happens to be busy, especially toward the end of semesters. It’s a matter of convenience, for some necessity, to have a personal computer. UR is not equipped to handle a large amount of students with constant needs for machines, and most would rather bring their own system than rely on public lab ones. If you have a personal computer, you can enjoy the super-fast Ethernet at your leisure, as well. Having your own computer is the best move to make at UR. You can have it in your room, save things you need, and not have to worry about its availability. Professors will also put things online or e-mail students about assignments and any additional info you need to know, so if you can’t get to a computer when you need to, it could present a large problem. Whether you should have a desktop or a laptop is up to the individual, but if needed, UR is equipped with wireless technology to have Ethernet on a laptop.

All dorm rooms have a super-fast Internet connection. Computer labs are crowded during big exam times, but not so much the rest of the time. I’d say bring a computer, just because the prices have come down so much and it’s so much more convenient. A laptop is a good idea because there’s a pretty good wireless network on campus. |

Our campus has two dedicated OS3 lines, each carrying a bandwidth of roughly 40 gigs per second. The labs are well staffed, neat, and comfortable. |

The UR server is very good. It is quick because it is LAN, so you’re always connected to the server. The network is also provided with anti-virus software that aids in the fight against harmful messages. |

The computer labs are typically busy, but not so much that you can’t get on a computer. I would suggest bringing your own computer, because there is only one 24-hour computer lab which can get really full. |
