Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

UR brings in students from other countries, different backgrounds, and a range of cultures, but if they don’t all mix it is an entirely different issue. Students will stick to their respective groups, and while the University expends effort on bringing in both minority students and international ones, the in-group tendencies still continue. The experience is also individual; a student may live on a hall with a large mix of diverse cultures or be in the exact same demographic stratosphere as their whole floor. Some also put forth the effort and meet new people, whereas others are complacent to remain in their comfortable circle of friends. On campus, whites are the majority, with a fair number of Asians and other minorities in the mix. People are generally friendly when interacting, and there are not many incidents of hate offenses, but then again, there is not a large amount of inter-mixing. It cannot be said that UR does not try to make the campus diverse; they certainly make it their project to attract minorities, but once they get here it becomes a different story entirely. Many stick to their own kind, so to speak, but this is not a blanket statement for the entire school. You will see students of different races and cultures hanging out, but you also see a white person from upstate New York everywhere. The meshing aspect could be improved, but the school is not exclusive by any means.

Diversity

The first thing that struck me about U of R is that it is so diverse. We have various cultural clubs that anyone is allowed to get involved in, ranging from belly dancing to engineering societies for minorities (e.g. Hispanics).

Represent the World

The University of Rochester hosts students from all around the world. I've personally met people from India, Kenya, England, Serbia, Hong Kong, and many more places. It is a great atmosphere, especially with all the different ethnic group clubs on campus that display a wide array of cultural traditions, celebrations, etc. There is always something new to learn about the world just by talking to people on the way to class

Facts

Gay Pride

There have been a few incidents with hate and discrimination, but the gay community is fairly visible. An organization called the Pride Network is active on campus for GLBTQ students.

Political Activity

Generally left wing. There have been protests against the war in Iraq and the Israeli conflict recently. There are relatively few Republicans.

Economic Status

Mostly upper-middle class and rich kids. It is an expensive school, so many people who go here are very well off. However, that is not the case in all situations. There are many local kids who are firmly in the middle class.

Most Common Religions

Christians are the majority (Catholic and Protestant have large presences). There is a large Jewish minority and Muslims and Hindus are also well represented.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are many multi-cultural and diverse greek organizations at University of Rochester. There are also various non-Greek student organizations that are active on campus, such as the Muslim Student Alliance, Indian Club, Israel Club, Black Student Union, and SALSA, the Spanish and Latino Student Association.
