Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The gym is one of the favorite, and most highly-praised, facilities on campus. It was completely overhauled a few years ago, and now it sparkles with two levels of machines and brand new locker areas, as well as all the other workout amenities. The library, too, is billed as one of the nicest buildings on campus, almost nice enough to make studying a pleasant experience. Combined with the stately academic buildings and red-brick dorms, UR is an aesthetically-pleasing place to live.

There aren’t many negatives about most of the facilities at UR. The buildings are functional and eye-pleasing, and large lecture halls manage to fit, self-contained, into the buildings. The student union, however, is oddly constructed in the contemporary IM Pei-designed style of glass and weird angles, and thus not at all practical. It does not really do the job of uniting the students as much as one would see at other schools. People hang out in the coffee shop, but other than meetings, not many student-initiated activities go on there. Perhaps it’s the uninviting design of the interior or the lack of lounges and comfortable areas. Whichever the case, the student union falls short of its potential. As the one weakness in a collection of otherwise first-rate facilities, though, UR averages out pretty well.

Lovin' Some Libraries!

The gym is very convenient, it's always in use, and you can even rent out bicycles for 24-hours at a time. The bikes are nice because Rochester is easy to get around if you have one. The libraries, as weird as this may sound, are the centerground for students on campus. There are so many library options, to either study or do work, it's really just amazing. The libraries are my favorite aspect about the school. Gleason is open 24/7, which is where a lot of students go if they're looking to do group work or study in a more social environment. Rush Rhees, for one, is beautiful, and provides an array of study spaces, such as the Great Hall and the Periodical Reading Room. Some rooms are strict silence, while others give more room to talk. Rush Rhees Library staff are always extremely helpful, and the Interlibrary Loan Service buys books for you if they don't have it so that you can check it out. WRUR 88.5, the campus radio station, is amazing, as well as the other clubs/activities to participate in on campus. It's extremely, extremely easy to get involved. You would have to go out of your way to not get involved.

Gorgeous Campus

The university is made up primarily of beautiful, old, red-brick buildings with the notable exception of Wilson Commons, which has a glass and metal facade. Wilson Commons has a few fast food options including Starbucks, Blimpie, Panda Express, a burger grill and pizza and salads. There is also a full-service salon and an art gallery. I don't know an awful lot about the gyms, although there are a couple: Spurrier, which hosts dance classes and has work-out facilities and Goergen, which is more an athletic center for basketball games, etc. The library reading rooms are to die for, and it's not uncommon to see students asleep in some of the first floor rooms.

Good Facilities for Smaller School

Since the U of R isn't huge, there aren't dozens of libraries or an acre size gym. However, the libraries we do have strive to suit student needs, have excellent staff, and an outstanding selection of resources. Our gym is fairly good, is kept clean and offers some classes and intramurals, though a few more would be nice. Because Eastman is part of the school, there are lots of practice rooms, we have access to practice rooms, and an art gallery, and are pretty close to other activities like an ice rink and the movies for which transportation is provided. More food options would be nice, but what we have is far better than I've seen elsewhere.
