Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

River Campus is generally thought of as very safe. Students feel comfortable walking around at any hour of the night, and there are multiple ways to contact security in the event of an emergency. Security is on constant patrol around campus, and there are more than enough on duty at any given time. The crime rate on campus remains low, and students feel safe walking around campus at any time of day.

Security is occasionally strict, as they are known to crack down on fraternities, and many end up on probation, so fraternity members resent security and say they give the fraternity houses undue attention. There was also an incident when security took students’ bicycles that were not locked up for safekeeping. Additionally, from the outside point of view, there is not a large amount of security to go through when coming in. Pretty much anyone could come onto campus, and if someone swiped them in with an ID, they could easily get into any dorm. A few incidents have occurred due to this, but the campus generally remains quiet.

Occasional Overbearing Security, but Overall Very Safe

The on-campus security can be overbearing at times. Although they are certainly just doing their jobs, they have become involved in many situations that didn't need their assistance. But again, their just doing their jobs. Otherwise, the security guards are very helpful and willing to understand that we're just college students bound to make mistakes. When some criminal activities were happening across the bridge, they were extremely vigilant in apprehending the criminals.

Fairly Safe

The University of Rochester is located near to downtown Rochester, and it comes with the urban/suburban mixture of territory that there is some trouble with crime in the immediate neighborhood, not involving U of R students. There have also been several reports of muggings on a foot bridge which passes over the Genesee River and connects the River Campus to Riverview, an upperclassmen housing area. The campus is well covered by Bluelight emergency phones and campus security has a quick and efficient response time. There is a university alert system which tells students when crimes have happened on or near campus. Security has an obvious presence on campus with the notable use of student security personnel who do rounds of living quarters, etc. All dorms are key-card access only. The things to do are: Try not to walk alone in the dark (call security for a ride if you ever feel unsafe and they'll pick you up), keep your doors locked - petty thefts have been known to happen, and never leave your electronics alone in a public place.

Walking Alone

I have never felt uncomfortable walking alone at any hour, and I have walked all over campus at some weird times. I often walk home from my friends' dorms across campus anytime between 1 and 6am, and my "scariest" moment was when a raccoon was guarding the doors into my building for a few seconds. So basically, it's not scary AT ALL. There is the random report every once in a while about assaults happening near the off-campus dorms, but everyone knows they're in a bad part of town, so it's common sense to walk with others.
