Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

River Campus is generally thought of as very safe. Students feel comfortable walking around at any hour of the night, and there are multiple ways to contact security in the event of an emergency. Security is on constant patrol around campus, and there are more than enough on duty at any given time. The crime rate on campus remains low, and students feel safe walking around campus at any time of day.

Security is occasionally strict, as they are known to crack down on fraternities, and many end up on probation, so fraternity members resent security and say they give the fraternity houses undue attention. There was also an incident when security took students’ bicycles that were not locked up for safekeeping. Additionally, from the outside point of view, there is not a large amount of security to go through when coming in. Pretty much anyone could come onto campus, and if someone swiped them in with an ID, they could easily get into any dorm. A few incidents have occurred due to this, but the campus generally remains quiet.

Safety and Security on Campus

I think the University is trying very hard to have a very safe campus. For instance, we have weekly letters, about what to do if you happen to witness a crime scene. We also have fire drills that prepare us when there is an emergency and we have to leave the dorms as quick as we can. Also, at the beginning of the year, they did a presentation about the rape cases on campus and how to avoid that. All in all, I think the University of Rochester is doing its best to make sure that the students are safe.

University of Rochester Security

I've never felt unsafe on University of Rochester's campus. Security is always present. Emergency phones are less than thirty seconds away from you at walking speed.

Campus Itself Is Safe

The main River Campus usually feels safe. They have the blue phones all over to contact security, and you frequently see security officers walking around. The main campus is literally across the street from a major, excellent hospital (part of the university). There is a nice, new health services building on the campus right next to a freshman dorm. There are also medical response teams you'll see especially at night. There are some dicey neighborhoods near the campus, so I'd avoid hanging around near the edge of campus very late at night and just be alert. But for the most part, major safety issues would involve stuff like unattended laptops being stolen in the library.

Did You Know?

Security officers at UR are trained for 32 hours to hold a New York State license and undergo an additional 320 hours of in-house basic training.

In 1995, security added a bike patrol, which cut down on response time, maximized visibility of officers, and reduced operating costs of security vehicles.
