Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If it lacks in other areas, Rochester makes up for it with its wealth of restaurants. There are student favorites that are walking distance from campus, with upper crust levels of food and atmosphere and lower crust prices. The variety is also very satisfactory; one can find Indian, Greek, Middle Eastern, Thai, Italian, or American restaurants all within a close radius. Ten minutes from campus in any given direction can land you at a small noodle shop or a fancier steak and seafood establishment. One restaurant, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, is an upstate legend, and it’s an experience in itself to dine there. The ribs are cooked in large rotisserie drums right outside the restaurant, and the combination of loud music, spicy smoke, and honky-tonk décor will make it a night to remember. The Distillery is another nearby favorite, styled in rustic wood with a sports bar atmosphere and good, inexpensive fare.

If you don’t have a car, you can sample some of the culinary finery of Rochester through delivery, but if you want to fully enjoy what the city has to offer, a car helps a great deal. In terms of options, there are of course the standard chains, such as Olive Garden, TGI Friday’s and Pizzeria Uno, but the true gems are the independent restaurants. Esan Thai is a lesser-known authentic Thai restaurant where you can get a full lunch for $4.95, cheaper than the cost of a less-than-stellar meal on campus. If you have the time and the means, you can take advantage of all the good old city of Rochester has to offer.

Good BBQ pretty cheap, but you probably need a car to get there.
