Parking permits are extremely expensive ($180/semester) and a lot of the parking lots are very far away from central campus.
College Prowler Take
A main issue is freshmen not being able to park on campus. This obviously limits the ability to get off campus, and freshmen are forced to take public transportation or other means to get off campus. Another qualm is the location of the lots; none of them are close to Residential Quad dorms, and you will be walking no matter where you park. Parking services are also more than willing to give out tickets if you are parked illegally. Many students feel this is unfair, since space is limited and students are then penalized repeatedly. This is in addition to not-so-cheap prices for permits; they cost a pretty penny, which must be shelled out each year if you want a spot. Parking could stand to be improved at UR, and it is a problem recognized by the administration, but the archaic system remains the same. There is simply too little space for too many students, and the parking office ends up overselling the lots as a result. It feels often that their main focus is to hand out as many tickets as possible. The average upperclassman at UR may need more than one hand to count how many tickets they’ve been slapped with during the academic year. There is an appeals process, but it is somewhat arduous, and students end up paying up rather than dealing with the hassle. Trying to deal with the staff at parking can also be exasperating, and it’s better avoided.

The Parking department loves to give out tickets. There's rarely enough spots, which is frustrating since there is a cost for a permit, and you can only park in your lot. The snow makes parking more of a hassle in the winter when spots are filled with snow piles.

Parking is something there will...
Parking is something there will never be enough of on this campus. It is pretty expensive, and there have been problems in the past with overselling lots and giving out more permits than there are spots. Students living off campus usually have to park in a lot that is pretty far away, which can suck during the cold winter months. |

I’ve never met more miserable people in my life as those that work in the UR parking office. If you comply with the rules and put in your request for a spot before the drawing, you should receive a parking spot on campus and close to your dorm. However, if you try and get a spot after the lottery, forget it. You will be near me, about 15 to 20 minutes away by foot. Those that request a spot after everyone else will be put in NSRL, a spot that’s about a 30-minute walk onto campus; however, don’t worry, because as the parking office will tell you, ‘there’s a bus that runs there everyday!’ My advice: avoid the hassle of trying to plead for a spot—it won’t work. Just put in a bid for a spot as early as possible. |

Parking is expensive and convenient only for juniors and seniors living in Towers and Phase. Otherwise, it’s really a pain for students not in those living areas. |
