College Prowler Take

River Campus is generally thought of as very safe. Students feel comfortable walking around at any hour of the night, and there are multiple ways to contact security in the event of an emergency. Security is on constant patrol around campus, and there are more than enough on duty at any given time. The crime rate on campus remains low, and students feel safe walking around campus at any time of day.

Security is occasionally strict, as they are known to crack down on fraternities, and many end up on probation, so fraternity members resent security and say they give the fraternity houses undue attention. There was also an incident when security took students’ bicycles that were not locked up for safekeeping. Additionally, from the outside point of view, there is not a large amount of security to go through when coming in. Pretty much anyone could come onto campus, and if someone swiped them in with an ID, they could easily get into any dorm. A few incidents have occurred due to this, but the campus generally remains quiet.

If you're a girl, don't walk alone or stray too far to the edge of campus at night. There have been muggings, so don't be an idiot about safety. Just take someone with you—preferably a tall, strong-looking male—and you'll be fine.

I feel very safe on the campus. Security seems to be very good, and problems are very rare. The only things you seem to hear about are occasional thefts from rooms (because the person left their door unlocked and left the area for a few hours) and from cars (because someone left something like their cell phone or CDs on their seat in clear view). Based on that, I would say that it is a very safe and secure campus.

I spent all four years living on campus, and I have always felt very safe. All the residence halls have card readers, so no one without a University of Rochester ID card can get in. There have been a couple of isolated incidents and minor thefts over the course of these four years, the kind of thing you’d expect to find anywhere, but we have security that patrols around and also students who work as security aides at night. I never feel uncomfortable walking across campus alone at any time day or night, but if I did, security is always available to escort people home. So all in all, I’d say it’s very safe.

I think security and safety on...

I think security and safety on campus is good. It seems like we have a very safe campus; I go out at all hours of the night without thinking twice about it. We also have ‘blue lights’ scattered around campus, which are used in case of an emergency. This doesn’t mean the usual things don’t happen; I know things have been stolen and rooms broken into. But those incidents are few and far between and would happen at any school.

Security is a joke. Honestly, when they are stealing bicycles themselves, I don’t trust them to enforce other rules. Students are generally safe on campus if they are just aware of what is going on around them. The biggest problems always occur if you try to go to the footbridge after dark on the weekends. Security, however, is good for escorting you the mile to the parking lot. That’s sketchy.

Security officers at UR are trained for 32 hours to hold a New York State license and undergo an additional 320 hours of in-house basic training.

In 1995, security added a bike patrol, which cut down on response time, maximized visibility of officers, and reduced operating costs of security vehicles.
