Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In a place where the average temperature for the year is 47 degrees, you can’t expect a Bahamas climate when you come to the University of Rochester. The biggest complaint is the cold, but Rochester is indeed located by the Great Lakes, just an hour or two away from our frozen neighbor to the north, Canada. The changeability of the weather can be annoying, with a large amount of variation in the temperature from one day to the next sometimes. There are beautiful days in the summer and fall, but once the winter descends upon Rochester, it seems as though it will never end. A lot of students from upstate New York are used to it, but those unfortunate few from Florida or Texas have quite an adjustment to make.

If you compromise on anything, the weather is it. Students have the tunnels to escape into and people hibernate for a good portion of the winter months, but you get used to the cold. The campus is actually quite pretty under a blanket of snow. Come April, you’re pretty tired of the white stuff and the perpetual “Rochester gray” sky, but you learn to deal. There’s a saying here: “If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes, it’ll change,” and that’s the truth.

I came during Rochester's best year.

Maybe the weather did suck back then when there were blizzards for a straight 6 months last year or so, but I'm a first year student who was lucky enough to experience Rochester's best winter ever. Sometimes the days are really sunny and the snow is really pretty during those days, and sometimes there's no snow at all. Sure, sometimes it's gloomy and rainy but just for a day or two. Other than that, the weather's great. Let's just hope it stays that way.

You get all four seasons. The fall is the best, trees on campus look exceptionally beautiful during the fall. Do remember to pack clothing for both hot and cold weather. It can be a bit unpredictable.

Four Seasons

Many people underrate the weather here: we have four very distinct seasons which are absolutely lovely at their peaks. Hot summers, picturesque autumns, snowy winters, and temperate springs leave little to complain about other than the fact that it gets VERY cold in winter and VERY hot in the summer. In addition, it may go from being 90 and sunny one day to 55 and rainy the next, so you have to be prepared for it all. All in all, it's really not as bad as people say it is!
