College Prowler Take
Torero mania clearly has not taken hold of the students on the USD campus. The size of the school, and the fact that it is not considered a big time “athletic” program, definitely hurt its ability to draw fans in an era where everyone expects national championships. Students who follow their teams know that while they will most assuredly lose when Kansas comes to town to play basketball, but it’s never really a walk in the park for the big boys. Torero teams play hard, and there is a definite air of appreciation between the students who go to the games and the students who play on the teams. USD students also enjoy a healthy intramural schedule, and many teams that form at USD go on to play in citywide tournaments at local YMCAs or legendary Robb Field.
Torero home games can be great fun. They provide an excellent place to socialize and connect with the surrounding community. USD is not a Big Ten school in a Big Ten town, and there are a million things to do on any given day or night in San Diego, so there just isn’t a rabid following of the teams. San Diego is just more of a place to do things rather than watch things. Recreation classes are very popular and fill up quickly. Intercollegiate and intramural Toreros also get to play on spectacular fields. The WUSA Spirit helped build up the main field, and there is a brand new “Nexturf” facility for IM sports. Former NFL quarterback and current coach Jim Harbaugh has brought excitement to the football team. Participating in sports at USD is as important as supporting them. Countless lasting friendships (and romances) are found on the IM fields.
