Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Torero spirit is clearly missing from student life. Even though tickets are free with a USD student ID, home sporting events are poorly attended, except for the very popular men's basketball games, which can sell out depending on the specific opponent. If free tickets aren't enough of an enticement, home games are usually preceded with a tailgate party with free food—and you will quickly learn in college that free food is hard to turn down! Home games are a fun way to spend time with friends while cheering on the Toreros, and the student section is filled with some enthusiastic fans continuously cheering while on their feet. True sports fan can join The Frontline, the Toreros student spirit club—members sit right on the sidelines, close to the action.

Intramurals and recreational classes are very popular. Intramurals are open to students of all athletic levels and are a fun way to compete with other people from USD. There is a variety of single-sex and coed teams that compete in a variety of sports, including basketball, dodgeball, flag football, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, and water polo. For more competitive athletes, there are club sports that have tryouts and compete with other schools. Recreational classes are more low-key and can be completed for a half-credit. There are more than 60 classes offered each semester, including bowling, massage, mixed martial arts, “So You Think You Can Dance USD,” surfing, and yoga. These classes are a great way to have fun, stay active, and try something new, all while earning credit.

Lack of School Spirit

Most students don't come out to the games and support their team. Stadiums and fields are often empty. The football team isn't the best, maybe that's why.

Sports Are Mediocre.

University of San Diego's sports are supposedly decent, but no one has any real idea because the student body rarely attends games or meets. While there is advertisements for big or small games, they often fall on deaf ears. The beach is seen as a much more fun/viable alternative.

Not a Main Attraction

Football is not popular at all, in fact not many sports are. Many athletes at USD participate not on scholarship but because they love their sport, feel a close identity to it, or for some other personal reason. Our basketball games are the most fun and popular.

Getting Tickets

Tickets can be purchased the day of the game. They are free at the ticket booth with as USD student ID, and there is usually only a short line.

Best Place to Take a Walk

You can walk around the entire campus in a short time, and the hills on campus provide a good workout. There is a nearby canyon running trail, but it is advised to only go during the day with others. Nearby Balboa Park is a great spot to walk, as are the miles of pristine beaches.

Did You Know?
