Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

School spirit is less than subpar at USD. Even though tickets are free and home games are very well advertised, attendance at these events is always pretty low. There are many teams at USD that boast winning seasons and conference titles, and in 2011, the school was ranked 96th in NCSA Collegiate Power Rankings, which rank schools on their athletics and athlete academics. USD’s athletic program may be well-respected off campus, but on campus, it's hard to find students that have gone to a single sporting event or know how a given team is doing. Frequently, on-campus clubs and the Alumni Association will host tailgates with free food and school gear to increase attendance at important or rival events.

Intramural and club sports at USD have great participation in comparison to the lack of interest in varsity sports. With 21 club and 10 intramural sports from which to choose—including water skiing, horseback riding, surfing, and dodgeball—there is something for everyone. And if none of the existing sports are what you’re into, starting your own is as easy as some paperwork and finding a few friends to join you. If competition isn't your thing, USD offers students Fit & Active passes and recreation classes—semester-long classes, such as Zumba, cycling, massage, sailing, kickboxing, and more than 40 others, which can earn you half a school credit. The athletic facilities on campus are well-maintained and very accessible. There are two gyms for students to use, located by the two main residential areas of campus, and special gyms and weight rooms for student athletes. All of the sports facilities are close to one another and easy to access from anywhere on campus.

Fan Support

The only bad thing about our school is the complete lack of school spirit during sporting events. Coming here my freshman year, and going to my first football game, I was extremely disappointed. It was our homecoming game, and barely anyone showed. Going to the soccer and basketball games are the same.

Lack of Torero Spirit

USD lacks Torero Spirit. The majority of the students at USD are very chill and easy going, so attendance at games is very poor. Most choose not to attend.

School Spirit

School spirit at USD is lackluster at best. Men’s basketball and women's soccer are the most attended games, but even so, it’s not rare for fans of the opposing team to outnumber USD fans. When a team has a good season, student response is minimal. Women’s basketball and soccer generally finish at the top of the WCC, but, unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to increase student interest or attendance at games.

Getting Tickets

Students get free admission to all athletic events. For most games, tickets are available immediately before and require only presenting a current student ID card to the box office attendant. For some popular games, like men’s basketball against SDSU or Gonzaga, tickets are available for pick up from the box office up to about 10 days before the event. Student tickets rarely sell out.
