Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

USD has a lot of policies designed to keep students both safe and comfortable on campus. Many students grumble about the enforcement of these policies. Coming back to campus drunk after a night out could earn you a write-up, a fine, a meeting with the dean, a mandatory alcohol safety course, a trip to what is infamously known as "detox," or any combination of these. Punishments get progressively worse for repeat offenses. Luckily, for many, the Residential Life staff will occasionally turn a blind eye to drinking and small parties. However, if alcohol use, drug use, or noise are excessive and blatantly obvious to the point that RAs can’t ignore it, expect to be written up. When RAs step in, they have to follow procedures that can be harsh—from steep fines to calling Public Safety.

Public Safety is notoriously strict. At night, if they see you acting belligerently or incoherently drunk, they won’t hesitate to send you downtown to detox, where you lay on a mat for four hours to sober up before being released. During the day, they enforce parking rules more than anything else. Parking citations are given frequently and can be exorbitantly expensive. If there’s a spot reserved from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and you park there at 4:55, they will ticket you without hesitation. It’s safer to drive around campus for 5 minutes and come back. You are allowed to petition tickets from Public Safety, but these petitions work only occasionally. All in all, if you know the rules on campus, blindly obeying them isn’t always necessary. The administration doesn’t want to baby you; they want you to be smart and safe.

Pretty Strict

The school is pretty strict. But honestly if you keep your head up and don't do stupid stuff in public your good.

Freshman year everyone lives on campus. The people that get caught for drinking in their room are always the ones with loud music. Keep it down and your fine. Public safety is everywhere on campus, so just be careful to avoid them if your up to something.

They are pretty strict about Greek Life. But we still find ways around it and have a great time. I highly recommend rushing, you'll have a much easier time than first semester finding parties etc. because you'll have 10+ brothers with houses down at the beach.

Very Strict

Public Safety and the university itself are very strict when it comes to academics and social lives (especially social lives). Parking tickets are given out all the time in ridiculous situations and the first time offenses for alcohol are pretty severe, especially if you are in Greek life. If you are sent home from an event, you check in with your RA who has to call Public Safety who drives you to downtown where they throw you in Detox for the night.

Campus Safety Has Got Your Number!

Campus srictness tends to be a pretty major part of the University of San Diego. Whether it is Resident Assistants or Campus Police, it seems like there are always eyes watching over us students. Punishments for being caught with alcohol include contacting the parents and come with the requirement of attending an alcohol education course; and the drug punishments can be even worse with the posibility of suspension or expulsion from the school. Once a student is caught twice with alcohol or drugs, they are put on probation and another offense could result in suspenion or expulsion as well. Watch out kids, the campus safety team has got your number!

Visitation Policies

The University has a policy on intervisitation (having a member of the opposite sex in your room). Guests are allowed from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The University considers it a party any time there's more than six people in a room. Additionally, if you're planning to have guests stay over, you're supposed to have it approved by your RA and Community Director (CD), but that policy is rarely, if ever, enforced.

Did You Know? The Department of Public Safety (commonly referred to as "P-Safe") is located on the South Side of Hughes Administration Hall and is open 24 hours.
