College Prowler Take
Campus police are visible all over campus at the University of San Diego, and as you can tell from their quotes, students find them “very strict.” The presence of security is a huge part of why USD has such a safe feel and gets such a good grade for security, but the sheer number of police-types leads to a high incidence of run-ins that students would rather avoid. As would be expected, students often resent the presence of authority (and seem to take particular joy in getting away with things). Parking strictness is unbelievably tight. The shelf life of an illegally-parked car is less than 30 minutes before a ticket arrives.
When it comes to the more serious infractions, such as drinking and drug use, law enforcement at USD gets a bad rap. Students often forget that drinking and doing drugs is illegal, and if they were ‘busted’ for such offenses on the beach, or in the park, punishment would probably be much more severe and swift. USD does a good job for a small, private university of keeping law enforcement and punishment local. Only rarely will the San Diego Police Department become involved in an on-campus incident. Typically, a student’s first infraction will involve a fine and some community service, or an awareness class. Further infractions escalate to parental involvement, probations, and ultimately (although rarely) can lead to expulsion. Most students find that these types of problems are avoidable. Refraining from participation in obvious misbehavior and resisting the urge to flaunt disobedience in the face of authority will allow a student to cruise by comfortably.

It’s strict enough to make me want to move off campus next year. But, the beach would have done that anyways. |

RAs and RDs are pretty honest about things. You can usually get away with whatever if you are quiet about it. I don’t recommend it, though, since Public Safety is kind of strict if you get caught. They will take you to detox, call your parents—the whole bit. |
