Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

University of San Diego literally stands out from the rest of the community because it is located on top of a hill that overlooks Missions Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Simply put, USD is gorgeous. It's not uncommon to find visitors coming to campus just to take a scenic stroll. Students can often forget that they are on a college campus, rather than an elite country club. The lawns are always freshly manicured and green, the flowers never seem to die, and the palm trees give the campus a beach vibe. On a warm weekend, USD seems more like a vacation spot. There are two pools that are a perfect way to cool down between classes, but one of the complaints is that there are no Jacuzzis—this just shows the high standards of most USD students.

The first thing you notice about the USD campus is the beautiful Spanish Renaissance architectural style, which gives each building a bit of character on an otherwise quiet campus. During the week, there are always events held in either the dorms or the new Student Life Pavilion. Another new addition to campus is Frank's Lounge, where people can meet up and play pool, watch TV or movies on big screens, or play board games. On the weekends, however, campus life can seem a little dead, especially during the day because most people are usually at the beach, shopping, catching up on work, or working out. But, overall, for a small school, USD offers quality facilities and a beautiful environment. Many students might even consider it an academic version of a four-year vacation.

Simply Put...Gorgeous

It's a one street school, which makes it impossible to get lost. Everything's within a 20 minute walk from one another and that's a plus. There's a place for everything, and clearly our tuition has kept the campus looking amazing.

Facts

"Green" Initiatives

In partnership with AMSOLAR, USD is installing solar panels on 11 campus buildings, which will generate up to 15 percent of the University’s electricity. The University also buys lots of local food items for its dining facilities and recycles its cooking oil. Recycling bins are offered across campus, and USD also offers the resources to recycle empty printer cartridges. There are “green” student organizations on campus, including Students for Greener Solutions (SGS) and Totally Rad Environmental Enthusiasts (T.R.E.E.). The Eco-LEEP (Living, Engaged, Educational Program) offers workshops and resources to help USD students and faculty live a more sustainable lifestyle.

The Student Life Pavilion is USD's first LEED-certified building. It features windows that open to allow natural ventilation and airflow, low-flow water fixtures, a centralized network that monitors energy use, a green roof to help reduce heat absorption (and most of the plants are vegetables used in the campus dining facilities!), and a decomposition system in the dining hall that breaks down food scraps into mostly water.

Favorite Things To Do

Between classes, students like to hang out at Aromas, spend time in the Hahn University Center or Student Life Pavilion, read a book in the Mother Rosalie Hill reading room, or take a walk, jog, or run around campus. Students also enjoy playing intramural sports, taking recreation classes, and playing 18 at the Riverwalk Golf Club. When they have the time, students also love to take the shuttle to the beach.
