Students say that USD is a small, safe campus at all times of the day because of the constant presence of Public Safety (P-Safe). The officers are often parked around the dorms, especially during weekends, to make sure everything is in order. On the flip side, some students say they feel like they are constantly being watched and aren't given freedom during weekend nights. Most P-Safe incidents involve public intoxication, but because USD is a private school, the local police don't get involved on campus, and P-Safe will generally just take students to detox, where they stay until you're sober. Violators may also have to take an alcohol education class. Overall, student safety is a huge priority at USD. The University even provides College Cab—a safe-ride service that will pick up students from anywhere in the area. Each student can only use it up to three times per semester and will still need to pay the cab fare (they have up to two weeks to pay it), but it’s a great service in case of an emergency or if you get stranded somewhere. The surrounding community, Linda Vista, isn't the safest location, but as long as you aren't walking across town at night by yourself, you should be perfectly fine. The canyon by the campus is a prime jogging spot, but should be avoided at night.
The Student Health Center provides most services to students free of charge. General examinations, immunizations, and other medical services are provided here. One of the most controversial things is that USD, being a Catholic school, is very hesitant about giving out birth control and condoms. Even the on-campus stores don't carry condoms; however, there are local convenience stores right around the corner.
