College Prowler Take

The first thing that any new student to the San Diego area has to become acquainted with is Mexican food. San Diego is home to the best Mexican food on the planet. Enormous arrays of 24-hour Mexican restaurants whose names end in “berto’s” (Roberto’s, Alberto’s, Juan-berto’s, Jaime-berto’s) dominate the local student scene. Every student has a different list of his or her favorites. You will wind up eating at a “berto’s” at two in the morning more than once. Santana’s is another 24-hour Mexican revelation. There’s a Santana’s right down the hill from USD. It is like a second dining room to many students.

The Little Italy region in downtown San Diego is famous for its name-sake Italian food. Felippi’s, Oggi’s, and NYPD pizza are excellent local pizza chains. Bronx Pizza in nearby Mission Hills is “the” spot to get a good New York style slice. For sandwiches, there is the legendary Board and Brew in Del Mar, and EZ Jays and Poor Boy in Pacific Beach. Thai, sushi, and steak houses also saturate the local food landscape. Any and every type of food can be found in cool little joints in Hillcrest, just south of campus. On the higher end, places like George’s at the Cove in La Jolla, and Donovan’s in La Jolla are great places to take your parents when they come to visit. The ocean view from George’s is unforgettable, and the steaks at Donovan’s are perennially voted among the best in the nation. Few places in the country compare to the variety and quality of the food options students have here in San Diego. It’s a great idea to make friends or work in the local restaurant industry for the fringe benefits alone.

In San Diego, you can find it all: Thai (Thai Time II on Midway is a favorite of mine), Indian (Star of India in PB), Mexican (Old Town or El Cotixan, if you are cheap like me), or Italian (Volares is excellent).

There’s so much off campus!...

There’s so much off campus! Santana’s is everyone’s favorite. It’s a Mexican restaurant that is down the hill from school and is great. It is open 24 hours, so of course everyone loves to stop there late at night after parties or after long hours of studying (that’s what I always did). There is a lot of really great food around.

Fashion Valley Mall (the best mall ever) has Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen, and others. Downtown, there are so many good restaurants. My favorite is Asti. There is also a Hard Rock Café, Sammy’s, and a whole list of others. Mission Valley has a lot of chain restaurants, and Old Town has the best Mexican food ever.
