Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Although students sometimes will compare dorms on campus to palaces, for many, the idea of leaving campus and living on the beach in San Diego is too alluring. Most students who choose to live off campus will live at Mission Beach or Pacific Beach. Many houses in these areas are owned as vacation or summer houses and come furnished. Some owners are willing to rent to college students, but many don’t. From the beach, it can be harder to get around if you don’t have your own car, but there are always people you can carpool with. USD has thought about starting a tram route that goes directly from Mission Beach to campus and is currently discussing the logistics of the proposal.

Off-campus housing is about the same price as on-campus housing, but living off campus also means you will now be responsible for electricity and water bills, as well as any extras, like cable and Internet. This doesn’t deter many students, as they are still attracted to the promise of freedom.

It's EXPENSIVE

San Diego has some of the highest living expenses so it's no wonder that living off campus can be VERY expensive. You can find some reasonably priced apartments but you get what you pay for. The apartments closets to campus are some of the most expensive. New condos are renting starting this summer across the street from campus but are very expensive. Yes, they do come with many amenities but at a price. If price is not an option then you will find something you like rather quickly.

A Little Pricey

Living in San Diego has its downsides: most places are expensive because of the city we live in. A lot of places are down by the beach making them automatically expensive. If they are not by the beach, they're a little more manageable. Overall SD is an expensive city to live in.

Apartments Are Expensive.

Off campus housing can be expensive in San Diego because it is a beautiful area and therefore a lot of people wish to leave there. Because campus is so close to the beach, it makes finding a reasonably priced apartment very difficult to find.
