Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

USF doesn't have a football team, so there are not as many fans at USF when compared to other colleges, but there is an impressive alumni following, and the majority of the students enjoy going to the games with their friends when they can. Most students say they are too busy to regularly attend games, yet there is a huge amount of participation in the intramural sports program. USF students say that intramural sports are more fun and entertaining, and, overall, students are more inclined to play the sport than to watch it. Also, many students abandon the school sports and look to the professional teams in San Francisco and the Bay area, such as the 49ers, A’s, Giants, Raiders, Sharks, and Warriors, to fulfill their sports needs.

It is unfortunate that sports teams at USF have such a small following. There are a fair amount of athletes with amazing potential, but aside from these athletes and their friends, the majority of people you’ll see at Dons games are either alumni or fans of the opposing team. However, when a Dons team starts winning more games, word spreads like wildfire and creates many fair-weather fans—the Dons fan base doubles overnight. This is usually the case with the men’s basketball and  women’s volleyball teams. The best thing for any newcomer to do is to check out at least one game at USF, and then decide if the whole Dons scene is your thing.

Not Very Popular

There are many athletic teams, but not very much support. Most people don't go to games and it is really hard for the student body to attract people.

Fun, but Not Supported

The sporting events can be fun to watch and the teams are usually pretty successful at home but the atmosphere and school support is just not there.

Most Popular Sports

In terms of presence, the basketball, baseball, and volleyball teams enjoy the most spectators and student support, even though they are lacking compared to other sports-oriented schools. Intramural (IM) and club sports are the most popular because they are known as the most fun.

Most Overlooked Teams

The tennis, and golf teams are unfortunately the most overlooked because most students are unaware of their existence.

School Spirit

While almost every student at USF owns some article of clothing bearing the USF logo, school spirit is practically nonexistent. Part of this comes from USF students being regarded as the snobs of the city, according to the other universities in San Francisco. Another part of this comes from the city itself. While San Francisco is one of the best things about USF, it is also one of the worst. All the incentives to leave campus end up dividing the students, who rarely mingle with each other unless they live in the dorms or are required to meet for a group project. Also, USF has few traditions or large-scale events to increase school spirit. Most students are enthusiastic about their respective interests, but other than that, graduation is the only time when everyone comes together to celebrate.

Getting Tickets

Tickets are available at the ticket office outside the War Memorial Gymnasium and also at the Dons Depot on the second floor of the UC. Tickets are free for students.

Did You Know? Before the 1950's, USF used to have a football team. In 1950, the Dons football team was so good that nine of the players went on to the NFL. Unfortunately, the school couldn't afford to maintain the sport, so in 1951, the president of USF dropped football. The University revived the team in 1965, only to have it dropped again for good in 1971.
