Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Ranked as one of the top 20 most diverse universities in the nation, USF is a hub for ethnic and international flair. Like the city of San Francisco, USF caters to all religions (despite being a Jesuit university) and all races. The variety of students you will find at USF emulates the school’s motto of embracing and accepting diversity. The diversity on this campus can open your mind and help to make you see things in a different light. It can also fuel your thinking—you may find yourself thinking about things you never knew existed or thinking in ways you thought you would never see things. Most students take advantage of this diversity by joining the numerous cultural clubs and organizations at hand. Learning about different cultures at USF happens outside the classroom just as easily as inside the classroom.

Despite the abundance of ethnicity, there tends to be very few clashes or conflicts, and at the same time, lots of intermixing. Other universities and areas of high diversity find their representative groups remaining closely tied and exclusive, but at USF, anyone and everyone is welcome to celebrate and participate in all aspects of each cultural experience available to them.

Ethnically Diverse

I will give USF this, it is an incredibly diverse campus with multiple clubs that seek to expand our student's knowledge on cultures and religions outside of their own. Each club also advertises special events that are advertised to every student in our personal school accounts.

Diversity?

USF is super progressive and socially conscious. And by that I mean, it's a bunch of rich white kids who are super progressive and socially conscious. The faculty is also mostly comprised of white men.

Facts

Gay Pride

Like San Francisco, USF is safe and accepting of its gay population. Not only are the students encouraged to be open about their sexuality, but faculty members are encouraged as well. This support is evidence that USF prides itself on its acceptance, promotion, and advancement of diversity.

Political Activity

Due to San Francisco’s liberal reputation, most of the students at USF are drawn to the liberal atmosphere. Social justice is part of the school’s motto; this can be seen particularly in its endorsement of students protesting the School of the Americas and the war in Iraq. While there are many radical extremists in the student body at USF, there are also some conservatives. Like most schools, much of the student body remains silent or apathetic regarding political views.

Economic Status

USF has students from diverse economic backgrounds, but there seems to be a good number of wealthy students, due in part to the expensive tuition. Some students complain about all the “rich kids.”

Most Common Religions

All religions are represented throughout campus, though there is a significant, but not predominant, number of Catholics. This is because the school itself is Catholic. St. Ignatius Church is on campus, and it is also the site of the graduation ceremony.

Minority Clubs on Campus

As USF is one of the most diverse universities in the United States, it supports the notion that minorities should be a strong and vital force on campus. There are at least 10 official clubs and fraternities designated “cultural,” while many more exist unofficially. A sampling of some of the minority clubs that are active at USF follows: Black Student Union, Chinese Student Union, Kasamahan (the Filipino-American Student Association), PEACE Partners (People of Color Enhancing Advancement in the College Environment), and Hui O’ Hawaii. For a complete list of minority clubs, please visit the Multicultural Student Services Web site at www.usfca.edu/mcss
