College Prowler Take
USF Public Safety has an important influence on campus life. While some incidents are unavoidable and inevitable, Public Safety does its very best to give the campus and its students a safe, secure environment. Officers patrol the campus 24 hours a day. The campus shuttle and safety escorts are available to bring students to and from main campus, Loyola Village, Pedro Arrupe, and practically any other place within the vicinity of campus. Thefts and robberies on campus and in the dorms have been met with a quick response due to the emergency poles strategically placed around campus and the fast action that results from calling the 24-hour safety line. Also, whenever anything happens on campus, the word is spread almost instantaneously through the USF Connect e-mail system. Keeping everyone aware of campus security breaches is one way Public Safety maintains safety. Another is through required ID checks at the entrances of every residence hall, although sometimes people (and their alcohol) sneak by because the checks are conducted by students. If anyone is caught drinking underage in the dorms, RAs will write a referral, but if a student is caught with drugs, Public Safety officers come immediately to handle the situation.

Security hasn’t been too good this semester. There have been quite a few robberies, particularly people being threatened in the dark corners of the campus. If you’re going to be walking around in the dark, make sure you’re accompanied by a large group of friends or call for an escort. |

Recent criminal events have ‘darkened’ the campus’s reputation as a safe and secure locale—be cautious after dark. Remember that San Francisco, like any major city, has its share of hoodlums. You might want to consider the University’s free escort to get you home safe and sound after long study nights and campus events. Stay alert and always watch your back! |

The campus, while in the middle of the city, is well protected and safe. It is close enough to everything that you can go anywhere, but it is secluded enough that you feel secure on campus. |
