Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In San Francisco, you can find anything that interests you, and as a result, the nightlife is jam-packed with action. Most students at USF enjoy the bar scene more than the club scene, though that is not to say many people don’t enjoy both. On any given night, USF students frequent bars all over the city, particularly on Geary Boulevard and Haight Street. Since taking advantage of all the city has to offer can take a toll on the wallet, students often opt to drink in their dorm rooms before going out instead of drinking all night at the bars. If you’re not into the drinking scene, going to the movies or to dinner at one of San Francisco’s amazing restaurants are high on the list of fun things to do. There are also millions of venues for live music around the city, and they often cater to the under-21 crowd.

If parties with fellow college students are more your scene, you’ll be rather disappointed at USF. While they do exist, parties are almost always off campus and since news travels around campus fast, expect a full house. Perhaps by joining Greek life or by making friends with those who are already involved with it, you may catch a better glimpse of the off-campus parties. This is not to say that parties off campus don’t exist and aren’t fun, it’s just that they are not really emphasized at USF.

Don't Be Fooled

Nightlife on campus is nonexistent, unless you're a closet masochist and enjoy camping in the atrium. Of campus, there's nearly every venue you can imagine, from gritty dive bars, to the Purple Onion comedy club, to the (relative) luxury of Sausalito or the Marina. There's more options if you're over 21, but the underage crowd won't be entirely left out - plenty of music venues are 18+.

The School and the City Are Definitely What You Make of Them.

USF has an interesting social scene. While it's definitely warped coming from a native/off-campus perspective, I've found that you definitely have to find a way into the social scene, which takes work. The parties are often sparse and spread out if you don't know the person hosting them (unlike San Francisco State across the park where you can walk into the apartment complexes and always find something). San Francisco is very much a 21+ city. The only 18+ club, City Nights, is a ghetto shitshow that will hold your attention for a few weekends but definitely gets old. However, the city is lined with interesting people and places and there are a lot of cool gatherings if you're willing to look for them (on sites such as http://sf.funcheap.com/). If you are off campus, HANG OUT IN THE DORMS. You'll meet people just walking in and out. All in all, the city really opens up after you turn 21.

Always Something to Do

Find your friends and go out! Clubs, House Parties, and Concerts are available every day of the week; there's something to do every night and it doesn't have to cost much. House Parties are always near campus, and if not, you can always ride the bus for free. Also, these bus rides are always memorable! Club events and Concerts only take place a couple of miles away from campus, taxi prize is good, and entry price for events is always fair. Oh,another thing, there's always a food place open!

Organization Parties

Occasionally clubs and Greek colonies will sponsor events off campus in restaurants or banquet halls. One of the most popular is the Rose Dance, put on by the Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity, which is reminiscent of a prom, only in college. Also, each academic department will usually throw parties for majors at the beginning and end of each semester, so check with your respective department for more information so you can enjoy the free food!

Fair warning: while the music is fun and the atmosphere gorgeous, Bubble Lounge tends to get very crowded and hot in its tiny little space. Technically a bar, Holy Cow also poses as a mini-club on the weekends and is a great place to meet other USF kids, as well as members of the young SF crowd. Cha Cha Cha

Cha Cha Cha is a popular Haight Street haunt, crowded every night of the week. Aside from ordering pitchers of sangria, try the calamari, but stay away from some of the other tapas. Students like to go here before clubbing.
