Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in. The average rent is well over $1,000, and finding a place is almost as hard as paying for it. But, however expensive the place may be, living in the dorms will most likely be just as costly, if not more. Fortunately, though, over the past few years, the rental prices have gone down, but they’re still not low enough to fit the average college student’s income level. If you’re set on living off campus after your sophomore year, then finding a roommate (or two or three) is the most cost-efficient way to afford living in the city. Finding a roommate isn’t too hard, especially because the Residence Life office has a special division for off-campus living, and their Web site features a listing of USF students looking for roommates. There are always fliers around, cluttering the bathrooms and other public places, describing rooms for rent and roommates desired.

The most popular neighborhoods for USF students living off campus are Richmond (especially right around USF and along Geary Boulevard) and Sunset, although San Francisco is small enough for students to live in any area and still be within a few miles of campus. If you’re adventurous, you can walk to school from most areas, and you’ll still always have the MUNI bus lines. The downside to taking MUNI if you live farther away is that you’ll be leaving for school at least an hour before you need to be there. (Try to find a roommate with a car.) Of course, living off campus has its perks, too, like having your own kitchen, a quiet and private place to relax or study, and easy access to your favorite neighborhood stores, restaurants, and cafés.

Expensive

It can be very expensive to live off of campus in San Francisco. You can live with a couple of people to better afford the rent. Parking in the city is also very bad, so try to use public transportation.

Expensive Living

Off-campus housing is expensive in this area. It's San Francisco. Either get a lot of roommates, stay with your parents, or live on campus.

How Far Are You Willing to Go

there are plenty of places to look into concerning off campus housing. The problem that manty if my friends ran into however was the fact that there only a small portion of the available housing was close to campus, which created a bit of a frenzy when it came down to signing a lease. Many were left to find housing 25-30 mins away from school which, isnt the end of the world, but iis a bit inconvenient if you have 8 am class or need to 'run' home for a second. Landlords are landlords, people usually have problems with them but overall, they are ok. I dont really have any problems with mine, she is dependable for the most part (just a little rough around the edges). Parking, unless you pay extra for a garage (IF you even have a garage at your place) is a crapshoot. I suggest the bus hands down the most convenient transportation system especially for students. The school has a portion of its website dedicated to this, but it is not very extensive and it's first come first serve, otherwise Craislist.com is your best bet.
