Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • Busses - They cover the entire city and are free with your student MUNI pass.
  • Classic Streetcars and Cable Cars - Even if you don’t use these often as your primary mode of transportation, it still can be fun and interesting to ride on what some would say is a part of San Francisco history.
  • Taxi Cabs - After those late nights out drinking and dancing, calling a cab is never a bad idea.
  • Walking - San Francisco is beautiful on foot, as long as the weather is welcoming.
Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • A door-to-door van ride to the airport is the most convenient way.
  • Airport Shuttle (415) 398-9090
  • American Airporter Shuttle Inc. (415) 923-6920
  • M & M Luxury Shuttle (415) 552-3200
  • Shuttles cost $11 - $20.
  • Super Shuttle (415) 558-8500

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you’ve never been to San Francisco, you’ll soon realize that parking is not only expensive but virtually impossible, and most streets are narrow, uphill, and two-lanes—and that’s if you’re lucky and it’s not a one-way. In order to get around with ease, MUNI is your only answer. It is one of the most efficient and reliable transit systems in the United States, though the buses are known to frequently run off schedule, but they are improving that.

MUNI busses run up and down almost every street you’d want to go—or close enough at least—so if you are relying on a bus to get you from point A to point B, you won’t have much walking to do at all. There are also metro-style cars that run from downtown to the outer areas of the city, old-fashioned streetcars (the actual ones used in the early 20th century), and, of course, the famous trolley cars that even native San Franciscans can’t resist from time to time. Typically, a one-way ride costs not much more than $1, but USF students receive a MUNI Pass that allows them unlimited rides on all MUNI transit systems. This pass is free because the cost is included in every student’s tuition. Almost every SFU student relies on MUNI—it’s the very best and most convenient way around town and the Bay Area.

Muni Buses, BART, and Caltrain

Muni Buses, BART, and Caltrain are the three main modes of transportation in San Francisco. The school pays for your Muni bus pass for the entire semester, so it is free for students and they run all hours of the day. There are numbers posted around the city at bus stations that you can call if you don't know the bus schedule or which one to take. BART and Caltrain are very low in price and can take you outside of the city.

Can't Complain

The school doesn't have campus transportation (it doesn't really need it on the small campus) but the Muni pass which all students get is pretty nice. Muni itself has a lot of problems, but hey at least we don't have to pay every time.
