College Prowler Take

When Mark Twain said, “The coldest winter I have ever known was the summer I spent in San Francisco,” he was absolutely correct. Summer and winter are practically indistinguishable, with chilling winds and lots of fog at night. Winter also has quite a bit of rain—never snow—which lasts from November to February, so it is suggested that you bring a pair of rain boots for the occasional storm. You can’t rely on the weather here, unless you rely on it being unpredictable. In the midst of a freezing summer, San Francisco can reach temperatures as high as 100 degrees. The best advice is to always wear layers because while most days are mild, the temperature can change in an instant.

Look forward to lots of sunny, clear days during the beginning of the fall semester. Shorts and capri pants are awesome for this weather. During this time campus is crowded with scantily-clad students sunning themselves on every grassy patch of  campus. In the summer, be sure to have a sweater handy, and as for the rest of the year, wear light layers, and you’ll never
be unprepared.

Weather patterns vary from day to day and, surprisingly, hour to hour. Wear layers—you never know when a fog drift might roll in or out. Comfortable shoes are suggested for the city’s hilly terrain, not to mention climbing up Lone Mountain. A swimsuit is perfect forthe Koret pool or a sunny day, tanning in the warm California sun.

It is basically chilly and cold all year round in San Francisco, except for spring and summer. Even then, although the weather is hot, the winds may still be a little chilly for some.

The weather is constantly changing, though it never really gets extremely cold or extremely hot. Depending on what you are used to, jeans and a sweatshirt are generally good enough. Make sure that you have a medium-weight coat, particularly for wind and rain.

Bring stuff you can layer because one part of campus can be cold and foggy while another is sunny and warm. You could leave the house dressed for a sunny day and come back in two hours freezing (or vice versa). Layering is key!
