The University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC has a very diverse student as well as professor population. There are many student organizations specifically for different ethnic groups and religious backgrounds. For example some of the more abundant organizations pertaining to the above are the Amigos Del Buen Sameritano organization, The Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Alliance, and the Association of African American Students. These are just a few of the opportunities present to help people from different background find a smaller community to connect and grow with.

Depends on your major, there are some majors that have no chance in H E double hockey sticks getting an internship. If you're not a business major, you're going to be doing a lot of looking on your own. Also, there are a lot of Slacker Advisers so if you have a good Adviser be grateful and utilize them to the fullest extent; then send them a beautiful thank you basket upon graduation!

Greek Life in the Greek Village is way too cookie cutter. Having different hair colors, different accents and such isn't enough to be "diverse"; sorry but it's not.
However, there is an exception Black Greek presence, as well as a Mixed Race group of Greeks that seem to be on the rise! Not saying that the Greek Village is all white by any means, just saying a lot of the groups could do a lot more to be unified with their Greek counterparts outside of their Borough. There are some sororities that i can easily name that do a great job reaching out to others! I have seen them socialize well after working with girls during sister sorority events. And then you have the girls that do a halfed job of faking niceness and being rude to girls who aren't in the sorority. So basically, know that What you see isn't what truly is with our Greek Life. Everyone is beautiful and pretty involved; but some lack the sincerity you'd expect from Southern Beaus and Belles.

There are a lot of different racial groups but in small percentages. This is a majority Caucasian school and some of those students are still living in the 1800s with how they treat people. There is a lot of segregation also, but it's probably by choice because of the poor taste in jokes and comments made towards people.
But one thing, i can say, there are plenty of people on campus who are trying to make this a more unified campus!

Guys & Girls:
There are a lot of visually attractive people on campus of various racial backgrounds. But everyone, with few exceptions, can be put into a "group" of sorts based on dressing style, friends etc. It really is like a continuation of high school.
There are some mean girls, who think that their beauty is reason to be mean to other girls and to do immoral things such as seducing boyfriends; but it's not common.
The fraternity men are pretty predictable and aren't exactly the eye candy on campus, but most of them are charming and eye catching for their leadership qualities and good manners.

The Nightlife at USC is considered really good. Most people go to five points, choices of bars are really limited if you are under 21 and don't have a fake. Some places make you pay a cover for being under 18. Five points can be a fun night sometimes. If you live off campus you probably have to take a taxi but a lot of on campus students walk. Five points is a really dangerous area though, a freshman girl was hit by a stray bullet a few weeks ago and is now paralyzed from the waist down. I prefer house parties which are better if you live in an apartment complex off campus.

Parking when you're coming from off campus is virtually impossible. That is what I am doing and I bought one of the cheaper passes which runs 80$ per semester. That is for the coliseum lot which I say I can get a spot in every 1/10 days. There are always cars circling around the full lot and so when a spot opens up it is taken right away. If you did some sort of illegal parking then theres a really good chance you got a ticket for it. Many people get tickets for things such as having your wheels touch the lines of the parking space or pulling through. I did not need a car my freshmen year. If you are bringing a car it is worth buying a garage spot even though they can be as much as 400$.

I am an advertising major with an english major. The english department is really the only place I find passionate teachers and students. Advertising is pretty easy and there are some cool classes to take but there are truly great professors in the english department. Especially Dr. Clementi

I was a pretty average student and high school and now I have a 4.0 here. At first I thought it was awesome but then I realized I missed being challenged. Most students here do not seem to like learning and many teachers approach their material with that in mind. I hardly have any work compared to high school. I am an advertising major with and english minor and do often have a lot of reading to do. People here fear being nerdy or geeky whereas that was sort of embraced at my high school. If you want easy classes with laid back teachers and students then this is the place for you. However, if you enjoy debating or having intellectual conversations then it probably is not.

Guys & Girls:
At USC there is pretty much one guy prototype that I meet and see everyday. I know several guys who this does not apply to but for such a big school the uniformity among the guys is pretty astounding. The dress is pretty much just khakis and southern tide or sorority function t shirt. Guys here are also into wearing vests, bright colors, and visors. Many of them are attractive, sure, but if you are interested guys who are individuals, can carry an intelligent conversation, and are comfortable being themselves around you then you might not like these guys. It really saddens me because I see a lot of guys who come to USC with their own style and personality but after fraternity rush they have a crewcut and seem more into their "number" then actually getting to know a girl. I do not know a lot of people in relationships here. Socially, it tends to be that girls hang with girls and guys hang with guys except when they are drunk at parties and trying to hook up.

It's a commonly known fact that most everyone from out of state does not pay full tuition because of scholarships. Most everyone I meet pays instate tuition. I pay a little more then instate with my scholarship.

It's mostly only freshmen who live on campus. There is a great variance in the quality of dorms. Most people do not like Bates West or the Women's quad which is getting redone. I lived in Patterson last year which is a very nice dorm. It has the reputation of being the nicest on campus but there is no sense of hall community. It seemed to me that most girls in Patterson were in sororities and many only chose to hang out with those people. If I could go back I would live in a co-ed dorm. My friends in Honors and Columbia always seemed to be best friends with everyone on their hall. It was definitely not like that in Patterson.

the facilities are great when it comes to the athletic centers they actually have their own facility away from the campus life a little bit. We have a lot of green space which we call it the Horseshoe due to the shape of the area. Libraries and student centers are great as well to help students with whatever they need.

The Campus dining at Carolina is pretty good. Lots of options to choose from. The only thing I don't like sometimes is that when I am in a hurry to grab some food in between classes and I want to eat healthy i would have to wait at least 20 mins in like just to get some food.
College Senior 2013-10-27T15:39:25Z
the facilities at Carolina are great we tend to have a career fair for students almost every other month, they even call to check on you to see if you have a job lined up after graduation.
College Senior 2013-10-27T15:37:09Z
I would give the campus housing because when you have the option to choose where you live you tend to not get what you want and sometimes they do not have enough space for you to live on campus so you have to find an apartment off campus to stay. If this happens though they do pay half I think for the housing situation.

Due to our weather always flip-floping from being super warm day to its time to put on some snow boots to stay warm doesn't really affect us from attending classes. Because we are in the south and we rarely get snow, if it snows classes are canceled due to us Southerns do not know how to travel in that kind of weather
College Senior 2013-10-27T15:31:37Z
Guys & Girls:
Young men at Carolina are usually preppy guys that tend to be Southern gentlemen mainly Frat boys and then you have the average guys who just come to class to get a grade others are either hood or laid back but still attractive. For women, would stay we tend to be Southern belles at school even some girls wear heels to class everyday.

They give it a nice go. Some things are certainly better than others. The salad bar offers a great variety of toppings and you can pick as many as you like. There is also a healthy options counter. It tends to cook meat and fish to the consistency of rubber. They take steps every year to improve and their sustainability efforts deserve notice.

Health & Safety:
USC is always taking steps to improve security. I feel extremely safe in dorms and I am fairly comfortable at night. It is important to stay out of five points after dark. Once you leave campus, the safety risks greatly increase. USC does an okay job of alerting students if there is an incident.
College Senior 2013-10-25T06:30:27Z
They know you are in college and completely abuse it. If something ever wasn't right I had to get my parents involved before they take you seriously. I doubt it is much different than other campuses. Don't live in the woodlands if you value your possessions and sanity.

Columbia offers a wide selection of cuisines and price points. South Carolina also offers two restaurant weeks throughout the year. It makes it easy to eat somewhere nice while on a budget. I love eating out in Columbia! Check out the happy hour at tsunami and download the campus special app for even more discounts. Pawley's Front Porch was featured on the food network and has half off burgers for Tuesdays happy hour.

At USC, there is a lot of nice weather. It has recently been raining a lot and I hope that is not permanent. There aren't too many shelters to hide from the rain on campus. The Springs and Falls are nice and sunny most of the time. However, Summer classes can get annoying with that hot and humid weather while commuting between classes.

Diversity is huge at the University of South Carolina. There are a lot of students who come and study from abroad. There are also a lot of clubs and organizations directed toward diversity. We recently had a reenactment of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement on campus.

The school spirit is great, and the fan support from non-students and alumni from surrounding areas are amazing. The athletics department, particularly the football and baseball programs, is what influences the reputation of our school. Although we have lost a few games already this season, we have a program that generates money for not only athletics, but money for the University as well.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
