The cops are usually very stirct the first month of school. They crack down on underage drinking, especially at bars. A first offense is a payment, second is a call home and more money, and the third is the last strike. This is mainly for Freshman and dorm policies. However, some of the police officers are very understanding and may not even give someone a ticket for underage drinking. It all depends on which officer catches you, and whether or not you comply to their commands. It is smart to be careful at the University if you chose to drink underage, but the police usually have bigger issues to deal with.

The restaurants surrounding my campus are all very unique to their location. Since I am from Chicago I rarely had the opportunity to enjoy real southern food. At school, there are many different southern dining selections. There are nicer restaurants like Blue Marlon, and there are also cheaper restaurants like Liberty which are both very popular dining options. My dorm building was close to downtown Columbia, so it was extremely convenient for me to walk down to the nearest restaurants. There is a variety of dining options, all dependent on what price and quality of food a person is looking for. Personally, I was able to find many dining options that were cheap and good quality.

The University of South Carolina has the top International Business program in the nation. It is ranked number 1 which gives the school as a whole an overall better reputation. The classes I took my Freshman year varied from professor to professor but in general the educators were reasonably demanding and extremely knowledgeabe in their professions. I feel that the University of South Carolina offers rigerous classes with highly intellectual faculty and staff. The quality of the academics provided at my University are great.

There are multiple campus buses that circuit throughout the entire campus, with designated stops just about anywhere you would need to go. There is a "NextBus" system which lists their arrival times by stop, which you can view online or download as an App on your phone. For the most part the arrival times are correct and reliable. Taxi cabs are generally safe and reliable. There is a great "Carolina Cab" service on the weekends which will take you home from downtown for free!

Columbia and the surrounding area can seem a little dull, but there really is a lot to do if you venture outside of the "college norm." The city is growing, and new restaurants, stores etc are popping up frequently. One of my favourite parts about Columbia in the spring are the multiple Farmer's Markets with fresh produce, food trucks, handmade jewelry and more. Unfortunately Columbia has a reputation for being unsafe, which is definitely true in some areas. As long as you are smart, stick together in groups of people and aren’t careless there is nothing to worry about.

No Experience – I didn't really use labs at school, but I never had a problem getting a good connection with my laptop.

Police in downtown Columbia are horrible. They literally target underage drinkers instead of taking care of the homeless people actually causing trouble like they should be. Alcohol use in dorms is so-so depending on your RM.

Public transportation is great at USC. Buses run all over campus and are constantly picking up and dropping off students in numerous convenient locations. There are also free cabs at night that students can take from downtown if you show the driver your Carolina card.

I love the sun. It doesn't snow. Gets a little rainy and sometimes floods.

Since we're located in Downtown Columbia, there is lots of really good restaurants relatively close to campus.

I work full-time so it's rare for me to find time to attend school functions, but there are always events going on. Every day there is at least 4 to 5 different things students can get involved in.

Being in the south, it's impossible to avoid a little unacceptance to minorities, but on campus most students are very open and accepting. Campus is filled with all kinds of diverse students from all over, and there are many clubs and groups specifically for minorities.

It's harder to fit in if you're a transfer student

Nightlife on campus is pretty much what you expect. There are a lot of bars in Five Points, but it is pretty dangerous when you are not in a big group. The Vista is also nice, but it is usually frequented by older students and young professionals.

Parking on campus is okay. You definitely need to come at least 20 minutes early so you can find a parking spot. It's pretty expensive to park in a garage and the money will pile up if you pay to park where there is a meter. The best option is to try to live close to campus or in a dorm so you can walk to classes.

The local atmosphere is wonderful in Columbia,SC. Columbia is not only a "college-town" for the University of South Carolina it is a medium-sized city and the capital of the state. There are endless things to do. Whether its going out to the bars in five-points or the vista or shopping. If you're wanting something outdoorsy there are several parks and also the Riverwalk where there is a huge walking trail that is literally right beside the river.

There are several different freshman dorms on campus. However, they is now a lot of construction under-way to revamp the dorms which is greatly needed. There are dorms that are just like apartments where you have your entire private room and small kitchen, and there are dorms that are the size of some people's closets. There is definitely a large variety of the types of dorms. Anywhere you live, however, youre just a walk away from the russell house and cafeteria. Some dorms, even have their own cafes in them. Also, just a short walk to five points and the bars.

Health & Safety:
There are several resources that students at the University of South Carolina can use as far as safety and security. There are night-time shuttles to pick up and drive students anywhere they need on campus so they don't have to walk by themselves in the dark. There are security posts through-out the entire campus. Also, if you need an escort to walk you to your car at night then you can call USC police department. I give the safety and security a B- though because in the past few years there has been many armed robberies and even a sexual assult that occured and the student body was not alarmed by text messaging until a day after.

There are several unique options of off-campus dining near five points which is just a walk from campus. Grouchos Deli, Salty-Nut Cafe, Pawley's Restaurant all have unique charms to them and have amazing food. All of them have student discounts or specific nights for happy hours and half of deals. Pawley's burgers can be very expensive but very much so worth it. If you're looking for something closer to campus and a little bit cheaper, there is Moes, Which-Which, fire-house, a pizza joint, and the everyly so famous "Yog-hut for some froyo"

Sports are huge. Especially football. GO COCKS! There's so much school spirit between tailgating and attending games. Every sport no matter what always has a huge crowd and it's always a good time.

Lots of people bring their own laptops so the labs are not usually too crowded, except during exams. Good quality, mostly Apple. Lots of printers available for everyone

Columbia is a big city that still is proud to host the University of South Carolina. There is much to do to make a student's life fun.
