There are select dorms that are strict on visitation and some dorms aren't at all. Like in Patterson you can have guys over until 2am and girls can stay over. I dont think girls can stay for more than 3 days though. I don't hear much about drug problems, its mostly alcohol. If you have any alcohol paraphernalia in your dorm you get a $250 ticket and you can also get the same ticket for public intoxication at a football game...
Parking is something that a lot of people complain about here. Its very easy to get a ticket for anythiiiinggg. Parking in garages is very expensive, starting at $320/semester.

A lot of the northerners come to USC because the weather is much better here. Its November right now and its still in the 60s. It does get very hot and humid in the summer but its nice because our winters arent that bad. It rarely snows here.

Downtown Columbia has a lot of things to do but its not a huuuuge city. The mall and a lot of other things to do are in a close city called Irmo. Most of the locals are big fans of USC so they love the college kids. Theres a few small schools close to USC but we don't interact much.

Guys & Girls:
Most people at USC are preppy without trying too hard. Everyone usually looks pretty good and dresses well. I'd say guys dress better because they wear actual clothes while girls wear comfortable clothes like big shirts and leggings, but still look cute.

The Gamecocks have a great stadium, practice field, and workout areas. A few years ago they completed an exercise facility for the student body that is completely state of the art.

The university is located almost downtown in the City of Columbia. Parking on campus is tough. There are lots of parking areas and garages that fill up quickly. These also can be a distance from your class, but there are lots of places to park. The issue is if you wish to pay the price. The good think currently is that if you park in a spot for the city of Columbia, the parking fine is just $7.00 currently for the 2013 year. So its not too bad.

The school is going through new IT upgrades and infrastructure that helping users to be almost anywhere examining online information or just playing around. Numerous spots on campus to use your devices if needed and connect to the web.

There are lots of choices to eat from chain style campus options with a few ethnic or healthy options across or around the campus. This could be better.

The university in some locations is showing its age. There is a massive construction boom on campus with new building and a few being renovated. The jury is still out until it is finished.

Guys & Girls:
Pretty conservative campus, there are always those that will stick out, but only a few over the top personalities. It is South Carolina, what do you expect. Most people have a southern drawl but not too deep. You have will everyone to be nice and hospitable, even when they might be trying rip you off. For some the will find that the culture is a little slower, but whatever you are into you can find, with enough patience.

Health & Safety:
There has been assaults, rapes, and theft near campus in the late night or early morning hours. The campus as a whole during the day is full of people. I have always felt safe on campus. Some of these situations may have been avoided by locking doors of vehicle, not walking alone at late hours, and if possible making sure someone knows where you are located, leaving from or arriving to.

There are lots of places close to campus and also very far away. This will depend on a variety of factors such as your cost and preference. There are upscale living areas, condo's, houses to rent, and apartment. There are lots to choose from.
College Senior 2013-10-30T21:51:53Z
Columbia has lots of southern food that might not be as healthy as you would like. There are lots of options around campus for any type of dining you would like. The overall items will be for American fare, but there are lots of Ethiopian, Thai, Mexican, Italian, Swedish, Chinese, and Caribbean selections.

Columbia has lots of places across the city to appease your palate. Living in the south you have a variety of things to choose from that range from surf and turf style, to wild game in SC. The city has many places to examine such as Columbia Museum of Art, the State Museum, Edventure for children, ITology, and lot's of place off the beaten path. There is one location that lots of college students do like to gather, but it has since become a little worrisome to the city for fights, assaults, and arrests. Five points is nicely designed but there are various personalities that frequent the area that make it an area to be aware of when you are out alone when going to and from bars or clubs. The city is working to deal with problem, but it will take some time to turn it around.

I am in library and information science as a graduate student. The courses have been great, the professors superb. There are lots of chances to have assistance if I should need it and side projects and events on campus to keep your geared to your major. A great experience. The workload is constant as I am reading lots of journal articles, and having to do research constantly to find them. Its not hard, however, but time consuming. My courses are mainly online so I am grateful I only need to come to campus every so often.

The university if really great, and it has the only School of library and information science in the state of South Carolina. The curriculum is a constant flow of topics for librarians. There are excellent professors who will assist you in the event there are problems, but are constantly putting out reminders. They truly don't want anyone to fail. It a good caring environment, but not to the point of overly emotional.

The Greeks at USC Columbia have great opulent chapter houses. Being southern there is a friendly atmosphere between the white Greek organizations and the black Greek organizations. There lots of parties and events, but the groups also conduct events in the community, for literacy, for competition, and just for fun. The university is trying hard to deal with underage drinking, outrageous frat parties, and hazing.

The amount was great for me specifically, but the school was transitioning to a new system and that caused a hassle that stopped not only myself but many others where we were dropped from class, lost financial aid, and had to get documents from instructors to state that we were in the courses from the start. Hopefully it has been corrected and is working. Most things were handled online and on the phone. I only needed to come to campus when there was a serious flaw that required me to prove that I was the person they needed to speak with about the financial aid.

The weather is beautiful in the Spring, Fall, and Winter. The only concerns are that Columbia, seems to sit in the middle of the state and when the summer is here, it gets very humid. There usually are 100% humidity most of the summer season, along with temperatures that range between 90 to 97 degrees. The summer of 2013 for Columbia was very rare and bearable with temperature high at 89-93 with low humidity. All other seasons are great with lots greenery in the summer. It does get cold from time to time, but will have the rare chance of light snow every couple of years.

If you don't live close to the campus. You have choices but the best alternative is to have a car. If you stay at one of the apts around campus you may be able to use the shuttle service that is offered by place you are staying. The university has numerous shuttles to take you around campus and various stops that are close to campus. The City of Columbia, SC has public buses that will take you about 20 miles out in most directions from the city of Columbia. The bus system does go to the airport, close to train station, shopping malls, and specific office complexes. There just is not enough of them to have frequent times to go throughout the day.

Overall the university is great and is always full of life and activity. The student body has many paths to consider for life, love, leisure, and labor.
