Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s true that the weather is sweltering down here in South Carolina, but the guys and girls are even hotter! According to students, the guys tend to be more chivalrous and charming than the average, and the girls are beautiful even when many of them may fall into the typical Southern belle category. They are the blonde and the beautiful, complete with a distinctive Southern drawl and, of course, boasting a perfect golden-brown tan from hours out in the hot Carolina sun.

This is not to say that all girls and guys are good-looking. It just depends on what you find attractive. There are many different kinds of people with varying appearances, such as who dress up in skirts and suits every day and those who go to class in their pajamas. There are also the Goths, the skaters, the Greeks, the athletes, and the intellectuals. Based on the traditional “standards” of attractiveness, students seem to think that USC is rather well-endowed with beautiful people.

For the most part, the greek life controls the school. Most people strive to be part of that group, so everyone tries to imitate them. Not going to lie, USC has pretty attractive students.

Greek Life is HUGE. Most all guys and girls are part of it can it all goes back to southern-ness. Accents, trends, activities.. all of it. There is a good mix of races but it can be racist at times, though I have never personally experienced this.

Obsession With Greek Life

The first thing asked when approached at the University of South Carolina is " What sorority/Fraternity are you in?" Greek life is very big here and the majority of student are seen everyday wearing their letters or some sort of greek life attire.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

The social scene at USC is always bustling. Because the campus is so big, and because there is such a big student body population, the parties are plentiful. Students generally enjoy taking the opportunity to get away from their studies. On the contrary, not everyone at Carolina is a social butterfly. You will find different kinds of people, some who don't care to socialize at all, and others who can't seem to stop. However, students in general are quite amiable, and it's not hard to find friends, whether it's in class, at the dorms, or out and about around campus. The abundance of social activity at USC is one of the things that make it such an exciting place to live and learn.

Hookups or Relationships?

The odds of finding a significant other at USC are really good, just because there are so many options. There are slightly more females than males on campus, but you wouldn't even be able to tell by walking around campus. While many students date or hook up, the majority of students are not involved in serious, long-term relationships.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Meeting guys/girls is actually a pretty simple task given the minimal amount of social acumen it requires at USC. With a fair ratio of guys to girls, singles always seem to be present. The state’s warm weather make the outdoor pool at the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center a hotspot for flirting action, codicil with the Horseshoe, which serves as Columbia’s "beachfront" on warm days with girls and guys sunbathing or doing homework. Class is also a common starting ground for relationships.

Dress Code

At USC, pretty much anything goes in terms of clothing. Most people tend to dress casually in whatever keeps them cool and comfortable. Some students don't even bother getting out of their pajamas before going to class. But there are also some people who don't go out in public without wearing a dress or a tie. Punky, preppy, messy, artsy—whatever your style, you will undoubtedly find your niche here at USC. Even though shorts or jeans and T-shirts are the norm, clothing generally doesn't attract too much attention, even if someone is wearing something completely out of the ordinary.
