College Prowler Take

While students may complain about campus food, the plethora of off-campus restaurants makes up for what may be lacking on campus. Most of the student favorites, such as the many restaurants in Five Points, Beezer’s, the Salty Nut, and the Pita Pit are all within walking distance of campus. The diversity of the food options off campus allows students to choose from virtually any type of ethnic food at a range of prices, and with Columbia being a college town, many restaurants offer late-night deliveries when most other places are closed.

Whether it’s dinner with friends, a hot date, a late-night study snack, or just an escape from campus food, the off-campus dining scene provides quality food with a broad range of choices for students to enjoy. You will definitely not go hungry in a city like Columbia!

There are some pretty good off-campus dining options at USC, with a Moe's and Firehouse Subs right off campus. The main hangouts are the Vista on Gervais Street and Five Points, especially Five Points which is more geared toward the college crowd but involves a lot of drinking. Mellow Mushroom Pizza on the Vista and Village Idiot in Five Points are really good, and Grilled Teriyaki is another good option.

There are good restaurants off campus. Columbia has a lot of choices for most types of food and price ranges. Some of the less popular ethnic places are a little hard to find, like Thai or Vietnamese, but otherwise there are lots of options. Beezer's, a sub place, is really close to my dorm. It is super cheap and really fast, so it's great for late-night hunger pains. The Mellow Mushroom and The Village Idiot, both pizza places, are super close to campus, and also well worth it!

The resturants off campus are...

The resturants off campus are fairly accessible and plentiful. Since USC is located in the center of Columbia, there are restaurants everywhere. I enjoy Monterrey's; it is a Mexican restaurant within walking distance from campus that pretty cheap for a college student's tight budget and very good! There is also Grilled Teriyaki, a Japanese-style restaurant that is really good cheap food as well.

If you want to stay fairly cheap, places like Ruby Tuesday and Applebee’s are good places. There is also Leo’s Wings right near campus that is reasonably priced, for the hot wing lover like myself. If you want to go more classy, there is a place called Nonnah’s, which I would only recommend for dessert and coffee. The entrees aren’t very large and are high in price.

There’s Yesterday’s, which is just a little pub-type place, and there’s the Village Idiot, a pizza place. There are other restaurants around, like Applebee’s and Ruby Tuesday, but I don’t know about much else because I don’t get off campus very much.
