College Prowler Take
Parking on campus at USC is absolutely atrocious. You can either get a garage space and pay over $300 for it, or you can get a $60 parking decal and fight to find a space. This is one of the disadvantages of having campus in the middle of the city. Not only are students looking for parking, but so are tons of other people going downtown for work. There are nine parking garages, which cost $260–$320 per semester, where students are guaranteed a spot. There are also parking lots located on the edges of campus where students with a decal can park. Considering the amount of students who have cars on campus, the amount of general student parking provided is not much at all. Parking may be one of the most annoying things you will experience at USC, but the University seems to be trying to alleviate the headaches it causes. Because there has never been a great deal of parking for students, students are always lobbying for more options. Taking into account the number of commuters that bring their cars to campus, the major problems fall to those who live off campus. The fact that many off-campus communities provide shuttles to campus is a major step in coping with the lack of campus parking.

Parking sucks. The garages are ridiculously expensive and limited, so most people buy a $70 surface lot pass. This gives you four options of where to park, all of which are either never available because they're so small, or a 15- to 20-minute walk uphill to campus. Also, they've oversold the surface lot passes, so sometimes I can't even find a parking spot! It's definitely worth it to buy a garage pass. Freshmen can bring cars, but it's really not necessary. As long as you know one person with a car for the occasional trip, you're set. Also, they give tickets like there's no tomorrow. I've received more than $100 worth of tickets because if you want to have your car during the day to go to work or run errands, you have to pay a meter that is very expensive.

Freshman are allowed to bring a car on campus, however, parking is not always easy. If you decide to go ahead and purchase a garage spot ($300+), then you have a guaranteed spot, and you can usually get a garage close to classes and your residence hall. If you go for a student spot, it is not the end of the world. As a freshman, you really don't need to use your car during the week. Park it in a good spot on Sunday, and leave it there until the weekend. I did not have a car until junior year, and people were more than happy to help me out with rides!

Parking is difficult because we have such a large amount of students on campus that bring cars. But also, we have a huge amount of commuter students that drive onto campus every day. Parking can be hard at times. I suggest you park behind the Coliseum and then catch the Cocky Shuttle up to campus. |

There’s no parking on campus. Or, it’s all really far away from anything. The best bet is a garage spot, but they are not cheap. |
